Alas de mariposa (1991)
Amanda must battle between being a normal child and the struggle to keep the relationship with her parents after tragic events.
Alas de Mariposa is a tragic film that deals with the hardships of a little girl, Amanda, and the struggle to identify and relate to her parents. After a terrible tragedy, Amanda must cope with the consequences and piece together her life in order to survive the rejection of her mother and grandfather, and hold on to the weak connection to her father.
El espíritu de la colmena (1973)
Curiosity and imagination fill the lives of two little girls.
When the film "Frankenstein" is showed in a small spanish town, two little girls begin to suspect there is a "spirit" similar to Frankenstein living near their home. We enter the world of these little girls and remember how we used to imagine and explore our new surroundings as we were growing up. Great Cinematography add to the telling of this creepy tale.
La muralla verde (1969)
Urban and rural living collide in this tragic drama.
This film is mostly about the rural living of a family who moves out of the city. The young boy, Romulo, does not know what the "big city" looks like and he uses his imagination to make his own out in the jungle. His family must deal with their decision, which sometimes brings terrible consequences. The editing and juxtaposition of images make this a true statement between what is right and wrong with the governments of Latin-America. The non-linear way of storytelling is used at it's best, which makes this film all the more interesting.
Camila (1984)
A love story set during times of dictatorship.
"Camila" is a love story set in Colonial Argentina. Camila is a young woman hungry for change and knowledge of the unknown. She meets Ladislao, a young priest whom with she immediately falls in love with. The two decide to escape in order to fulfill their desire for each other. They settle in a remote village but still must face the consequences of their decision. Directed by Maria Luisa Bemberg, "Camila" tells the story of a passionate woman who will fight for what she desires and is willing to sacrifice everything for it. The film is true to the times in which it is based and true to the characters it is based on. Rosas, the dictator at the time, is portrayed in a way that is also true to history. The director Bemberg is also a passionate woman and filmmaker who struggled with censorship in the making of this film, but prevailed. Although it is based on real people, some of the characters are shaped in order to benefit the ideals of the director, but a good film nonetheless. I also recommend "I, the Worst of All" by the same director.
