Three Kings (1999)
Great film
I thought this film was great. Sure it was marketed like an action film, do you think so many people would have seen it if it had been marketed as a subversive art flick? When i saw it in a theatre, the change in the audience's attitudes was almost as amusing/insitfull as the film itself. Two kids were in front of us cheering as an Iraqi soldier gets shot. They came out a whole lot humbler (and smarter).
As for the people who think this is a fantasy or slam on the US, I went to see Three Kings with a friend who had been a US Army Sargent in Lebanon. He thought it completely plausible (except the ending).
Le jardin des plantes (1994)
Great bittersweet film
I know people who lived through occupied Paris, and this is a film that shows the humanity that occurred during that time. The grandfather isn't only shielding the grand-daughter, the girl is shielding the grandfather from the agony of witnessing his only son's execution. The German's soldiers occupying the zoo aren't evil SS men, they are some teachers who want to be home with their families and want to sit out the war with the Allied troops hiding in the cellar.
The question of this movie is what is heroism and where does one draw the line between people and enemies.
Yume (1990)
Stunning
This is one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen. My children (5 and 6) and I have seen it 4 times and never get tired of it. I get goosebumps thinking about it. Check it out, if you don't like one short, fast forward it. There is something for everyone in it.
