The Follow (2001)
short but sweet
I checked out 'The Follow' mostly due to the attractive BMW commercial to hit their new films site. I think if more car companies took the cinema approach to showing off their cars, it would be a much more pleasurable experience. Rourke and Whitaker fit their roles as the abusive husband (ironic he took this role) and the agent perfectly, and Owen is suitable as a stunt driver and actor.
And in case anyone was wondering, the end song is "Una Palabra" by Charly Garcia and Mercedes Sosa. Beautiful end song to a very short but enjoyable experience.
Angel Heart (1987)
The Mickey Rourke we loved
Sad but true story of how gripping Rourke's performance is in this movie and his other 80s choices, as compared to the post-boxing era of Mickey's life. I very seriously doubt we will ever get a chance to see Mickey in a starring role again, so if you haven't seen his role as Harry Angel, you are missing out one of the best actors of the 20th century right when he chose all the right roles.
There was no generic in any role Rourke played in the 80's, and this movie is certainly not generic also. You approach the search for Favourite with Harry. You are torn by the search with Harry. And you take the eye-opening climax with Harry full-steed.
From a devout Rourke fan, I implore you to watch this movie. And even if you dog Mickey more than the media, you should at least see it for Alan Parker's directing.
Memento (2000)
Most innovative film in a long time (go see it)!
If you're tired of the sappy teeny-bopper movies that lack plot, originality, and tell the same prima facie love story that movie watcher have been so accustomed to, THEN GO SEE THIS MOVIE.
This is one of those movies you have to dodge around to gather the whole plot and exactly what did happen because of the constant scene switching in time reference. Nothing is in a standard beginning to end format, everything is jumbled (giving you the cinematographic feel of being Leonard Shelby - not knowing which end is up). The eerie sounds cue fantastic scenes, and when it's all said and done - you will eventually figure out what has occurred in one man's tale of 3 ongoing years of hopelessness (you actually relate with his condition), and more to come. Only problem is - he won't figure it out. Two minutes from now, everything will be forgotten.
It's like you just woke up. And you breathe the breath of fresh filmmaking. I can't wait to see Insomnia(2002) with Pacino!
Nolan has exuded life into a new breed of contemplating thrillers. You will enjoy this movie, and put some major thought into it when the screen goes black.
Guy Pearce looks like he has a fabulous and interesting future in film ahead of him, he plays the part to a tee. Carrie Anne Moss does an excellent job as well. Joe Pantoliano also takes the cake - he needs more recognition! An acting trio to be acknowledged.
Get Carter (2000)
Great movie depending on your stance...
This 2000 re-make of "Get Carter" can be seen in two different lights. If you've seen the re-make, I probably wouldn't reccomend the Stallone, beefy 2000 version at all. I, on the other hand, did not see the original - and thought this movie really catches your eye, and is worth a watch. Great performances by Stallone, Rourke, and Cumming.
But it seems to be missing a few aspects which downgrade it to around a 2-star rating. Nevertheless, if you're looking for a movie that's rough around the edges, Get Carter will fit the ticket. Just don't get lost in the glitsy, and sometimes annoying, camerawork.
