Electric Dreams (1984)
One of my all-time favorites
I was a sophomore in high school when this movie came out, and a real big-time computer geek (still am, but at least now geek is chic). When I first saw it, I didn't realize it was a love story. I just thought it was a cool movie about a computer who "comes to life" due to a freak accident. Now that I'm grown up and have seen it a few more times, I know that it is about love. In fact, I recently caught it on Encore Love Stories channel on my dish, and of course recorded it.
Even now, in the year 2001, this movie is still enjoyable. It's got a wonderful heartwarming story, lots of cool effects, and a soundtrack that still is great. I just wish that the owners of the movie would hurry up and put it out on DVD. I'd buy it.
On a side note, as of this review, I don't see a single negative comment on this movie. I'm impressed.
3-2-1 Contact (1980)
One of my favorite shows growing up.
Back in 1980, when I was in 3rd grade, I remember a brand new show premiering on PBS called 3-2-1 Contact. At that time, I had just started getting interested in science. Since I didn't have cable, and Mr. Wizard I had never heard of at the time, I found this show to be very interesting. It became an after school routine for me to watch, looking forward to what they had planned to teach that week. For those of you who've never watched it, they would to devote an entire week on a particular subject, which really kept you watching if it was something that interested you (or kept you changing the channel if you were bored by it, something that never happened to me on this show).
3-2-1 Contact really inspired me to maintain an interest in science ever since then. It was 3-2-1 Contact that got my interest in computers back then, which turned out to be a lucrative career for me. I also used to subscribe to the magazine they had by the same name (also published by Children's Television Workshop who created Sesame Street and The Electric Company).
All in all, I'd have to say that this was a very wonderful series to learn from, and now that it's on Noggin a new generation of kids can learn from it. My young son and I watch it together now, and he's learning a lot from it.
Caddyshack (1980)
One of my personal favorites
OK, first of all, I personally have to say I do NOT agree with the reviewers that say Caddyshack is the "worst movie ever" or other negative comments. I have seen the movie many times over the years since it's debut (it came out in 1980 when I was 11 years old), and have always enjoyed it. It never fails to get a laugh out of me.
I will admit however that this movie is not to everyone's taste. My wife for example hates it. She loves the sequel to it though, which I cannot stand. It does have a lot of funny moments, like the priest playing golf in the rain, Bill Murray pretending to play golf while cutting down some flowers, and Rodney Dangerfield enraging Ted Knight.
I will also admit that my taste in comedies tend to lean more toward the silly (anything Monty Python, Mel Brooks movies, etc.) and downright stupid (Airplane, The Naked Gun, etc). When I am in the mood for a comedy, I don't want to have to "think" about the humor in it. I just want to laugh and enjoy myself. I save the thinking for more serious movies like action, drama, or science fiction. Too many movie critics (both "professional" and amateurs) tend to judge comedies too harshly, saying that they are too inane, that the gags are too stupid, and that the movie in general insults the intelligence of the viewer. IMHO, so what? In most cases, that's what makes a movie funny. If you get caught up in the stupidity or silliness of a movie, then you're bound to be too critical and not enjoy the movie for the purpose it was intended.
Anyway, now that I'm done ranting, I would say to you that if you are thinking about seeing this movie, ignore the mixed reviews and just watch it. If you don't enjoy it, you're out what, 4 bucks at the most for the rental? Big deal. If you do like it, then nothing was wasted, and you may even consider buying a copy.
