Dark Harvest (2004)
Don't be fooled by the box cover
I picked up this flick because the cover interested me. Boy was I mistaken. For a low budget movie it started out OK. Your standard group of horror movie teens go to a isolated house and get hacked up. At some points I thought that this film would come up with something new. No chance of that. Not even the skinny dipping scene could save this flick.
I knew it was a bad omen when I saw that the writer was also the director, OK that's not the bad part. Some writers work good as directors of their own work(this isn't one of them). The bad part is that the costume designer and I think the director of photography both share the last name of the writer/director. Now I'm all for using family on a film if they can do the job but come on. First of all the scarecrows looked as if their masks were bought at the local costume shop and weren't even scary(more like laughable). Second the camera work was really bad. In the first scene in the present day, when the lawyer gets up the shake the kids hand the camera stays in place and shoots his torso for a moment. Come on.
On the plus side(not a lot of plus's). The gore FX were not bad. Their is a nice shot of a scythe coming threw a door and threw a guy's shoulder. Hey, if you want a laugh watch the end credits, they show all the bloopers(which is what the whole movie seemed to be to me). The "hero" with his tragic past tries to come across with some cool one liners but they just made me laugh.
Somewhere in this flick was a good story but I couldn't find it. In the end I felt that I wasted $2.00 and 90 minutes that I won't get back.
Jeepers Creepers 2 (2003)
Made up for the first.
After I was disappoited by the first movie I sworn I wouldn't see this one. But it was in the dollar rentals and I was in a horror frame of mind. Well I kind of liked this one.
The Creeper is starting to grow on me. I liked the fact that he get some new weapons. They may be a little gross but they are cool. I still have one question. In the beginning of both films he is wearing clothes but by the end he goes natural. Why'd he lose the clothes? In the first flick he drives a cool old truck, but can fly. Why the truck(even though I really liked it)? OK,so that's two questions. This movie had a better story than the first. I guess from what I heard on the DVD this flick takes place during the same 23days as the first (way to milk a concept). This time the Creeper has a bus load of new donors to choose from. Their is a opening scene the sets up a lttle payback on the Creeper that's pretty cool. I don't want to ruin it for anyone but I would have never guessed how this flick would end. So I guess this flick is worth watching.
Shadow Fury (2001)
Could have a lot been better.
I gave this movie a chance. At times I was entertained but at other moments all I could think was "What were they thinking?". I really liked Masakatsu Funaki. He reminds me of Sho Kosugi, my idol in the 80s. OK so Funaki is a lot more buff than Sho ever was. This is the first film I've seen him in. According to his profile he's a pro wrestler in Japan. I hope he makes more movies in the U.S..
The story made little sense. At times I was ready to fall asleep. The only thing that saved it for me was the kickass action, care of Funaki. I would be awesome to see him do some cool modern day ninja flicks. For a buff guy he can move pretty quick. Another kickass person in this flick is young Taylor Lautner. This little guy only has one scene but wow I was impressed, and I've been in martial arts for 25 years. Back to the sucky story. At one point the heroes have to fight these mutants, but they look and act like zombies. What's that all about? The Bottoms character is suppose to be dying and needs a liver. By the end of this movie I wanted him to just die already. Like I said. The action is the only thing that made it worth watching. If your not a martial arts fan, you may not like it.
Jing wu men (1995)
Kung Fu soap opera
As a fan on Donnie Yen and Bruce Lee , I had high hopes for this movie. Instead I got a Chinese kung fu soap opera which only slightly followed the Bruce Lee classic. Yen seems to be playing Bruce Lee playing Chen Jen , not Donnie Yen playing Chen Jen. He even does the howling that Lee was famous for. I would have rather have seen Yen play the role in a new way and use his own style martial arts instead of striking the same poses as Lee did.
At first I had a problem with the way the film looked (seemed like TV). Then I found out it was a TV series,OK that's fine. Second, the fight scenes were poorly filmed (most of the movie was poorly filmed). Next the fights sucked. I have seen many martial arts films and have studied martial arts for many years and know good fight scenes. I was shocked to see Yen choreographed the fights. After seeing Iron Monkey, BladeII, and Highlander:Endgame which Yen choreographed as well and were awsome. What the hell happened Donnie?
Can anybody tell me way the love interest Yumi(Japaese) dresses in Chinese clothes the first half of the movie and Japanese the second half? I mean first she loves Yen then his rivel then Yen again. This is what I mean by "soap opera". According to IMDB Yen also directed and edited this film too. Donnie, why?
I thought a remake of a Bruce Lee movie was a cool idea. Maybe I way mistaken. Even with all this I think Donnie Yen has a future as an action movie star. He has a better look than Jet Li and I look forward to his next movie.
Final Voyage (1999)
This movie needs to sink.
This movie made little sense. The acting sucked and the story needed a overhaul. The few things I did like about this film where wasted. First the cast. Claudia Christian's a babe and her character was pretty good as kick ass hitwoman. Erika Eleniak also a babe but she's done this gig before(in "Under Siege" and is 1000 times better than this). Next the production. It pi**es me off to see dumb movies wasting good FX and vehicles. I don't know how but they had a C-130 cargo plane to parachute from, during the day(Gees sutle). A night drop would have been much more stealthy. Hey, if you watch closely during the drop, one of the parachutist looses his diving mask. I won't go into tactical FUBARs in the theives operation(which there are many). I never saw theives dress in matching uniform either. Damn that ship sure came apart after the first explosion. Too many explosion for no reason. And the ballroom explosion was footage from "Deep Rising". Bottomline: with some work this could have been a good movie instead of stinker.
Shadow Warriors II: Hunt for the Death Merchant (1999)
I'm impressed
I wasn't sure what to exspect from this movie, but I like Navy SEALs. Hogan impressed me with this role. All this movie needed was a little tweeking to make it a kick ass flick. Some of the scenes were a little much. Example: Hogan attacking a terrorist camp alone with a gun in each hand. They needed to get Richard Marcinko the "Rogue Warrior" to be tech adviser. Hogan's character seems to want to be like Marcinko but just can't make it. However I did like this flick and would like to find the first movie to compare them. It was a worth while rental.
Highlander: Endgame (2000)
Finally a worthy sequel
After two very confusing sequels a great sequel is here. Forget about the stuff you see in the trailer, the unneeded magic fxs are gone (which makes the story stronger). This movie blends the original film with the TV series and comes away with a awsome movie that can be seen without having seen the last two sequels. I am a huge fan of the films and series and this film delivered the goods. The fight scenes are topnotch (I'm a martial artist and hate cheesy fight scenes). Adrian Paul is one of the martial artists I've seen and it is a treat to see him fight. One thing I did notice about this film is how old Christopher Lambert looks, so maybe it's time he passed the sword to Paul. I hope Paul continues to make "Highlander" movies with scripts as good as this one. With addition of Dawson,Methos, female immortals and the Watchers (all from the series) things should get very interesting. Here's to Adrian Paul and the hope more movies will follow SOON.
The Wolves (1996)
Don't mess with the wolves
No big star, but a good story. Great scenery and wolf footage(without a doubt the coolist animal on earth). I was suprisingly pleased with the way the story unfolded. Some people may think it's too Eco ,but it made sense to me.
The story revolves around Blackie, he goes to Alaska to check out his families land and finds himself being steered aways from the dirty dealings of King ,the badguy on the family payroll. Soon his guide Larry show him more than he could imagine in the forest. When Blackie's sister shows up things get difficult. She so naive she believes King's bull and is ready to sign the land away, but Blackie ,Larry ,and the pack won't go silently into exinction. Fangs bared, it time to take a chunk out of the badguys.
