Father Brown: The Serpent Within (2023)
What about Sgt. Goodfellow?
This was a very good episode to end the 10th series. The cast changes have their pluses and minuses, but the show continues to be interesting and entertaining.
I don't know if they are using it as a cliffhanger for the eleventh series, but I feel that the situation with Sgt. Goodfellow, one of my favorite characters, was left unresolved. With Chief Inspector Sullivan choosing to stay in Kembleford, does Sgt. Goodfellow still get promoted to Inspector, or will he remain a sergeant who is dutifully loyal to his Chief Inspector, but allows Father Brown access to various pieces of evidence? I guess we will have to wait until the eleventh series to find out.
Star Trek: Picard: The Bounty (2023)
Outstanding performances
It was great to see more of the TNG family added to the cast in this episode. They all did a fantastic job without being put into the story just for the sake of them being there. They each make a contribution to the story.
Special note should be given to Amanda Plummer's performance as Vadic. It reminded me of the performance her father, Chirstopher Plummer, gave in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, and I mean that as a compliment. She is an amazing performer in her own right, but in this episode, she has outdone herself. If this story arc had been presented for Season 2, there would definitely be a Season 4.
If you haven't seen this episode yet, look for the Easter eggs planted throughout.
Last Man Standing: Helen Potts (2015)
A Blast from the Past
You may want to call it "stunt casting", or you may call it a nostalgia episode, but last night's episode of Last Man Standing was pure genius. If you were a fan of Home Improvement, you noticed a number of elements from that show inserted into this episode. First of all, the guest appearance of Pat Richardson brought back many memories of the previous show. Her references to her late husband being obsessed with tools and "souping up" all the appliances in the home was a direct reference to Home Improvement. But there were also several subtle homages which included a replication of Tim Taylor's back yard, the neighbor looking over the fence where you could only see his hat, and the clever scene transitions reminiscent of the old show. The clincher, of course, was the appearance of Jonathan Taylor Thomas as Pat Richardson's son. It was even a good story which also paid tribute to veterans and the job they did for their country. My congratulations to Tim Allen and the other writers of the show for keeping this show interesting and entertaining.
Windtalkers (2002)
Once you get past the gore, it's a great story.
John Woo does a fantastic job conveying the horrors of World War II, especially in the graphic scenes of people being killed or wounded. However, he also does a great job in relating the story of the Navajo Codetalkers who helped to save many lives during the war. Little was known about these brave men who had the unique gift of being able to speak a language totally unknown to the Japanese forces. We learn that the codetalkers not only spoke in Navajo, but also used code words within the language so that even if the Japanese could translate the Navajo language, they still would not know what was being talked about. As I said before, once you get past the gore, you are presented with a story of bravery, honor and courage that finally does justice to a group of Americans who offered a "special gift" to their country. It's a film I encourage everyone to see.
Donovan's Reef (1963)
A prim and proper Boston lady travels to a beautiful South Sea Island to try to acquire her father's share of the family business, but finds true love instead.
FYI...the summary of this film identifies Dr. Dedham's daughter as "Elizabeth". "Elizabeth" Allen is the actress who portrays the daughter. The character's name is "Amelia". This film may not be one of John Wayne's best movies, but it provides all the action, fun and adventure typical of all his films. This is a film for the whole family to enjoy.
