Not a really bad film
18 July 2009
I picked this up for $1 while looking through dvds at a dollar store. The synopsis was what attracted me (love old-Hollywood "user" films with murder). The next thing that made me look was the actress, Michelle Pfeiffer. She is always good film material for looks as well as ability and she did not prove me wrong with this one. The others involved, also, were good in their roles - especially Darren McGavin, Hector Elizondo, and Lois Chiles.....you could feel the venom dripping from their lips at times. Would like to commend the work of Brian Kerwin as well....nice looking hunk with plenty of chemistry in the sex scenes. Certainly worth the $1 I paid for it and more. Too bad about the ending. A complete bummer. Did they run over budget and have to stop or was it just a bungled script accident? Almost killed what could have been a neat "Hollywood-noir" film.

Excellent, real-to-life drama in Smalltown USA
21 April 2003
Don't know why I didn't see of hear of this film back in 1997, but I don't remember any noise about it at all. Excellent screen play with fine characterizations by all actors; absorbing story and a true-to-life story that hits home at any time. The era was well represented by costume and settings; one of those "good little films" that get lost in the shuffle I guess. Bravo to all associated. I'll recommend it!

Worth watching
4 August 2002
This is good to watch if only for Vera-Ellen, Celeste Holme, Ceasar Romero, J. Carrol Naish, Anne Revere, and especially, the great crooner Dick Haymes who had a marvelous voice and wasn't a bad actor either.....only the material was schlocky in this one. I would recommend Costa Rica use this for tourism!

Entertaining and interesting look at Prima!
6 February 2000
Excellent documentary on one of the greats of New Orleans at the beginning and at the peak on down to the end. Informative and reverent interviews with close friends and fellow entertainers. Sam Butera still thinks Prima was the greatest and loved him like a brother.. Sam is masterful on the sax til yet and younger musicians should take a good look at a real cat!

Absolutely stunning early technicolor movie!
3 February 2000
Have not seen the entire movie as yet, but the mid to end is stunning! The usual story line was palatable but Baxter looked too old. Joan Bennett was super-duper beautiful with lovely speaking voice. Loved Mischa Auer and Alan Mowbray! The costuming was stupendous....furs, hats, ensembles to rave about. As a collector of vintage fashions, I am mesmerized by this spectacle and plan to try to find a copy of this great film.

Schlock movie..but Margie Hart did well
2 February 2000
Margie Hart was Margaret Hart Ferraro, a former burlesque dancer that, according to wire stories, was called "the poor man's Garbo"; went on to become a savvy real estate investor, political wife and society matron, who died Jan 26, 2000 in Los Angeles; age was estimated at 84 years. Not bad!

Fun, music, silliness, typical 40's stuff.
2 February 2000
Great dancing by Ann Miller and some fellow; Langford looked kind of puffy; Desi was cute and so was Bracken. All the cast seemed energetic and there was good ensemble choreography. Wish it was in color! The surprise was Richard Carlson who looked really hunky in those days...Lucille Ball was great from the beginning...really a beautiful woman with plenty of comic talent!
