MythBusters (2003)
Not just busting myths
It's not just the science / engineering of busting myths that makes this great TV. It's the whole attitude of ..."we recreated the myth conditions xyz and it didn't blow up. So, how much xyz would it take before it DID blow up!".
I like the tension between the leads - it adds interest to the show and gave rise to my favourite line - Jamie: "Adam needs a cookie".
Only quibble is that sometimes they go after myths that can be easily confirmed / denied in easier ways eg. they had a video of the taxi being blown away by a 737! I wouldn't mind this if the narrator wasn't quite so "now we're going to finally prove it" and was more like Jamie and Adam "let's have some fund and see if WE can do it".
Rats in the Ranks (1996)
A documentary with everything
I can only agree with other comments that this documentary is so perfect it might have been scripted. It has everything you could want in a drama right down to a suspenseful climax.
One thing that hasn't been highlighted is the battle that some council members have with their own conscience - watching them agonise between their consciences and their party loyalty is funny and painful at the same time.
Koyaanisqatsi (1982)
Even better "live"
I saw this movie in my uni days and enjoyed it at lot. So I was excited to be able to see it again a couple of years ago in a "live" performance at the Sydney Opera House.
The images were projected on a massive screen while the soundtrack was performed live by Phillip Glass and his ensemble.
It was a superb performance and very moving emotionally - even more so than I recalled from seeing the movie. The soundtrack complements the images brilliantly and brings out the anger, sadness, frustration of modern life.
Definitely worth watching.
