Life Is Wild (2007)
Africa is awesome!
I wanted to watch this show because I love Africa and I was excited to see a show every week that would remind me of it. That part has been great! The dad on the show is a vet, so there are plenty of African animal plot lines, and that's fun. The rest of the plot though is predictable and not all that compelling. I continue to watch each week, but I don't think I'd care too much if I missed one. It is a pretty clean show, which is rare and refreshing. The boy gets into trouble, but it is usually followed up with a lesson and some character growth, another nice route. I think that the show is picking up speed, I'm starting to care a little more about the characters (7 episodes in) - sometimes a show takes a bit of time to get going. I will watch it as long as it runs.
Women's Murder Club (2007)
A different twist on an overused theme
I thought there were more than enough murder shows on TV with all the CSIs and Law & Orders, etc.. But I like Angie Harmon, so I gave this new show a shot. I was really impressed with the twist of the "women's club" -- A basic stereotype is that men are more emotionally detached, so they can better deal with the horrifying nature of this kind of police work. This show places women in these hard roles, with all their emotions still running. That causes a different dynamic, allows for a new twist on the homicide scene. WMC ends most episodes with these 4 women gathering to check in with one another, to deal with the emotional difficulties of the job and life in general. It adds a soft touch, shows the harsh reality of the homicide beat, and makes the characters more real and likable.
Drumline (2002)
Good memories of HS band
I loved Drumline, not because of normal movie criteria, but because I was in a field marching band in high school. It is a ton of work, great fun, and not a lot of people seem to know about it. I was glad to see a movie that showed the hard work it takes to do those shows and plus gave us some amazing routines to watch and some outstanding percussion work. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this movie. The plots are typical, but I really don't mind watching the same IL' plot over and over again. :) It's a sports story in a way, the cocky young frosh joins the team and tries to start out on top... Boy meets girl... Boy overcomes obstacles... Boy earns the respect of his leaders and peers.... Teamwork... You know.
Igby Goes Down (2002)
Why?
I don't know what made me want to see this movie. I didn't enjoy it at all. It was such a dark and depressing outlook on life. I know that it may be reality for some people, but the movie offers no hope for those struggling with such a life. I see no point in making a movie dealing with these circumstances unless you offer a chace at redemption, a better life. Why make a movie that is just depressing? Don't we have enough real sadness? I think this world needs hope.
For Love of the Game (1999)
My love for the game
I am a huge fan of the game. This movie is the best movie in a baseball setting that I've seen since Field of Dreams. It's not only about the game, it's about this pitcher's life. Baseball fans should appreciate the emotions shown in this film. I feel that this movie was very accurate in it's portrayal of the game of baseball. A couple minor details could have been changed, but I found it very believable. This is a very touching movie and I'd recommend it to anyone, not just baseball fans.
