Elevated (1996)
Cube's little brother
After watching the excellent movie, Cube, I decided to research about the director, Vincenzo Natali. I found out about the short film "Elevated." I watched it on the Independent Film Channel late one night and found many similarities to Cube. It starts out with two people in an elevator. They're interrupted by a blood-covered man entering the elevator claiming that there is an "Alien-like" monster outside of the elevator and he insists that they should go up, to the top floor. It has the same creepiness and originality as Cube, which makes it an excellent 25 minutes. I do wish that the director would have made it into a long movie, making the 25 minutes the beginning and then the rest of the movie about the monster and the other people in the building. But then again, having it stay a short film leaves a lot to the imagination, which I cannot say is true about a lot of other movies these days. I give it ***1/2 out of ****
The Darkling (2000)
Pretty Scary
I started watching this movie late at night on USA Network not knowing what to expect and I was very pleasantly surprised. This movie was pretty scary for a TV movie - especially at night. Just the voice of the Darkling made me a little uncomfortable. Aiden Gillen was a very good actor and played a good man gone insane very well. If you want a pretty good scare, watch this movie. The twists are very good and so is the spooky ending.
Alien (1979)
The Best Sci-Fi Movie Ever?
I decided to see Alien because I heard it was the best sci-fi alien movie ever. Unfortunatly, I didn't find it as good as it was said. It was very slow, a little confusing, and not scary at all (at least on my terms) I don't see many scary movies but this one had nothing for me. No suspense, not much action. The scenes went very very very very slow. To me, it wasn't the best sci-fi movie ever. Maybe I'm just spoiled by the movies now...
Predator (1987)
What an Action movie should be...
Predator was what an action movie should be. The movie is about 7 commandos in a jungle being hunted by a trophy-hunting alien. The movie goes into a litle depth about the characters, especially Arnold Schwarzenegger and Carl Weathers. But the best part of the movie was they didn't spnd 90 minutes trying to figure out what the alien was. All they wanted to do was get out or kill it. It was a very simple plot. That was what made the movie so good. They didn't waste time with trying to figure things out. They just did them. The dialogue was pure and simple. A simple action movie makes the best action movie. Rent it and see for yourself...
Mission to Mars (2000)
What?
When I saw the preview for Mission to Mars, I thought "Wow, I PG movie that looks good!" I decided to go check it out and see if it lived up to its previews. I'm sorry to say that it didn't. Mission to Mars is about the first mission to mars where there is a strange disaster and then the rescue mission going to save it. There were many reasons I didn't like this movie. First of all, they skipped around way too much. It went from 2020 to 6 months later to 6 months later in 10 minute time frames. It was very confusing. Second, there was NO action except what was shown on the previews. It was very slow with a lot of stupid mishaps and stupid dialogue. Third, it was predictable. Just like every other sci-fi movie these days (excluding Matrix). I knew what was going to happen at th end of the movie in the first five minutes. I won't reveal it to see if you can. What we need is a unique space movie. This wasn't unique. Fourth, it seemed like it ran out of money. After a while, the special effects were just...dull.
Overall, I hope Red Planet is better.
Any Given Sunday (1999)
The best
Any Given Sunday, in my opinion, was the best sports movie of all time. There is no other movie that can relate to the intensity of Any Given Sunday. You could actually feel how the players were feeling and you knew why they were feeling that way. The games were amazing. Computer graphics couldn't compare to the stunts these actors had to do. All in all, this movie will keep you thrilled at every moment. It is truly an intense experience.
The Matrix (1999)
Whoa...
There are very few movies that actually make you think "what if..." after you see them. This would definatly have to be one of them. The Matrix not only has the BEST special effects of this century (Star Wars 1 was pitiful compared to it,) but it have one of the best storylines of all time. It has you leaving the theater asked yourself "what if..."
