Katy, la oruga (1984)
So many years!!!
Wow!!! I'm just shocked... I saw this movie when I was about 8 years old, and I have just discovered it wasn't from the Disney Studios. You must understand that for a girl that age at that time, knowing the difference was not important. I remember seeing it like 20 times, I just adored it. The story of Katy was so appealing for me. I loved the end when she finally became a beautiful butterfly. I know it is no "Bug's Life" or "Finding Nemo", but for an 8 year old girl in Panama in 1984 it was wonderful animated entertainment.
The Sixth Sense (1999)
Very Good, but not the best I've seen..
Hello. Yesterday I watched the Sixth Sense again, and I would like to share with you the impressions that this movie caused on me since the first time I saw it. I really enjoyed the Sixth Sense and believe that it has a very good plot and script, but, it didn't surprise me; since the moment I heard that the ending would surprise me, I knew that one of them was dead... It was logical. In the 60's there was a movie with an ending like this, Carnival of Souls, so, I didn't see anything I haven't seen before.
Haley Joel Osment performance was superb. And I must say that Bruce Willis' too. It's a real pity that he has done so many bad movies before (Die Hard 1, 2, 3, etc)(Just keep out of this list Pulp Fiction, Last Man Standing and Twelve Monkeys) because The Academy seldom forgives... Probably he will receive an Oscar someday in 25 years... And Toni Collete, it is always nice to see her... Muriel's Wedding is one of my favorite movies... This movie was very good, but I can't say it is the best psichological thriller I have ever seen... That place still belongs to "What ever happened to Baby Jane?"...
Independence Day (1996)
The worst movie I've ever seen (after Showgirls)
Sorry, but I really hate this one. Not only I don´t like the characters, but the plot was sillier than a Ren & Stimpy episode. How could it be possible that we could stop an alien invasion from a group of extraterrestrials that came from a place that is millions of light years far from Earth in just four or three days? How could it be possible that I have an antivirus program here in Panama and they didn't? What did Jeff Goldblum want to tell me at the end of the movie when he finally accepts the cigar? That since the aliens could attack us in any moment we shouldn't worry about such things as lung cancer or contamination? I never thought I will say this, but please, even "V" is better than this movie. The only thing I like about Independence Day was that Will Smith's dog didn't die. Really! he was the only character in that movie that deserves to continue living. And I don't know for what, because with everything we are doing to our planet I don't think we'll survive until the day real aliens come to visit us (if they aren't here yet). An advice, rent Mars Attacks!, sit back, and enjoy laughing at the human race. Or if you want something more serious, watch The Day the Earth Stood Still or The Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), and think!
Reservoir Dogs (1992)
The best spent 75 cents of my whole life!
I saw Reservoir Dogs for the first time four years ago. It was being played at the University of Panama theater along with some John Woo's and Takeshi Kitano's movies. I could only watch one of the show and I selected this one. It would be my first experience with hyper-violent movies and I didn't know what to wait. I hate Stallone, Seagal, Van Damme, Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis' action movies, and I feared this could be another action flick. But thanks God it wasn't. It turned to be a wonderful movie full of interesting characters, with a coherent plot (something that most movies lack of) and intelligent dialogues. It just made me see movies in an entirely different way. It may sound silly for some of you, but this movie really touches me. I understood perfectly Mr. White feelings, as well as I understood why Mr. Orange told him the truth at the end. Since that day I am more exigent with the movies I see; it made me see that there can still be made good movies, intelligent movies; and those are the only ones I want to see, because those are the only ones I deserve. I know, this is not a proper review, and maybe it is too sentimental for this kind of movie, but I just wanted to share with all of you what this movie did for this young woman here in Panama. Those were the best spent 75 cents of my entire life.
Sailor Moon (1995)
This is my favorite cartoon (after Snoopy)
(First, I want to ask for your forgiveness, my English is not perfect since I'm not a native speaker)I have to warn you I'm not talking about the DIC version. Here in Panama we were lucky enough to have the Japanese Version shown on our screens. Yes, it was translated into Spanish, but I guess it didn't lose too much of the magic it must have in its original language for I really enjoyed it. And I really think that Serena is a nice example for girls. The only thing I don't like about her is her feelings about school; but you can see all along the story that she matures, and at the end (when she finally wins over Sailor Galaxia) Serena is a much stronger girl who will continue growing and who will be prepared when the moment comes and she has to take her place as Neo Queen Serena. It is somehow funny for me to think that here in Panama we are more open to deal with such themes as homosexuality that in your country (personally I believe that Haruka and Michiro form the most beautiful couple in the series). I don't think it is true. What I believe is that you, citizens of the United States of America, have to get real, and that you have to stop trying to convince yourself you are so innocent. Believe me, I don´t have anything against you, I believe you have a wonderful country which I plan to visit some day, but sometimes I really don't know who are you trying to deceive. You say one thing, but the rest of the world through the movies, the T.V. and the Internet is looking at a very very different truth. So, to conclude, I just have to say that if you can, watch the original version. I haven't seen the DIC version, but I'm pretty sure it can't be equal or better. Don't do it because I'm telling you, do it because Serena really deserves it!
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Wonderful Movie!
I just have to say Pulp Fiction is one of the best movies I have ever seen. It is funny, creative, satirical and intelligent; and though I like Reservoir Dogs more, Pulp Fiction is not too far away of being as great as that. And I must say too that Pulp Fiction should have won the Oscar that year instead of Forrest Gump.
