Dirty Harry (1971)
10/10
The first of a superb run of "Dirty Harrys."
12 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Frank Sinatra, John Wayne and Paul Newman were first choices for the role of Harry. Sinatra and Wayne were simply too old for the role and Newman was too slight and wouldn't have have portrayed the stoicism that Clint did. The role of Scorpio was supposed to be played by AUDIE MURPHY! Why not Woody Allen? Who made the above choices?

Aside from those comments DIRTY HARRY was a magnificent blockbuster! It's what people want to see. They've had enough of the insanity spoken by the judge in the film.

I want to congratulate the writers, Don Siegle the director, and all connected with this cinematic triumph. If anyone should have received an award, or at least a nomination, for best supporting actor it was Andy Robinson for his Scorpio. It was the most realistic playing of a psycho only equaled by Jessica Walter in "Play Misty for Me" also starring Eastwood. The only fault I find is Harry throwing his badge away at the end. Absolutely no reason for that. All the sequels prove this was one of the most appealing films.

Casino (1995)

Great entertainment!
9 January 2006
Prior to viewing this film I was not a Scorcese fan. Casino was a masterpiece! He created three hours of pure entertainment. Robert De Niro as always superb along with Joe Pesci and James Woods et al. I'm saying the film belonged to Sharon Stone. She was more than convincing as the meretricious demimonde. Her character began as a shooting star and deteriorated to a burnt out derelict. She should have won the Oscar for this awesome portrayal. Direction was meticulous with each shot and scene saying something pertinent to the plot. I did not appreciate the F word used so many times. it tends to cheapen the film. What did we do for sixty years before the F word was used?? I'm fortunate in viewing the film on TV where the filth was dubbed over. I remember seeing a film called "Glen Gary, Glen Ross" I had to leave the theatre due to the senseless filth in the language. I mean really stupid, unnecessary profanity. Later I saw the film on TV sans the filth. It was a very good film. I have nothing but praise for Casino and all connected with it. Kudos to Martin Scorcese.

It's home run of a film!!
7 April 2005
All the gals did a magnificent job in this delightfully entertaining film. Tom Hanks and the rest of the cast also deserve cheers. Penny Marshall's direction was flawless especially when invoking tears in many parts of the film. The ladies like Lynn Cartwright et al were not only brilliantly cast as older look-a-likes but they simply WERE the younger actresses 40 years later.

The film is paced well with excellent timing and begins in 1943 went the men went to war. As I understand the Ladies league lasted between 1943 and 1954. I, myself, enjoy women's baseball and soccer. A true spirit and comradery was displayed throughout this exciting and touching movie. Congratulations to all and I certainly want more films like this one.

What a show!!
23 March 2005
I was always fascinated by the life of Leona Helmsley (nee Rosenberg) so I gave this a chance and was riveted to the end. Suzanne Pleshette deserves some kind of award for this one. SHE WAS LEONA. Lloyd Bridges was absolutely believable as Harry Helmsley. The casting, direction, camera. timing and pacing were all noteworthy. Suzanne was gorgeous at 53, which is fairly rare, and played her from a young woman up through the years. No wonder Harry went for her. Who wouldn't? I admire a beautiful Cobra but I wouldn't marry one......... Every person connected with this production deserve a big hand in producing such quality.

Just another piece of Hollywood TRASH!
17 March 2005
Again we have Rob Reiner and his ilk making a film to aid in depicting our military personnel as blood thirsty Neanderthals. Jack Nicholson, as Jessup, a decorated full bird Colonel is made to look murderous. Too bad he didn't have the usual cigar in his mouth. Of course he couldn't smoke in court. Tom Cruise is a good actor and played the most detestable, offensive, and undisciplined squirt I've ever seen. The whole defense team looked like a bunch of kids from school. The Hollywood crowd has excelled in degrading our military since WWII. Now why do you suppose that is??

I wonder if Reiner and his kind would have produced the same degrading garbage when General Patton was heading into Germany. I don't think so.....

A tough one to decide on........
24 October 2003
Meaning it was so well done BUT Peck certainly was miscast. I credit him for giving it one hell of a try that almost was there but missed. I understand that Peck knew this and even wanted Huston to play Ahab but the studio bosses wanted a big name.

My choices for Ahab were Raymond Massey and Boris Karloff for their portrayals of insane characters. Karloff definitely would have been the ultimate as he strikes fear in young and old with just a look.

This version is certainly worth seeing as the cast performs brilliantly.Just one more criticism....... Richard Basehart was too old for the role of Ishmael. Ishmael is around 17/18. Basehart was in his forties. It was silly to see a mature man give the lines of a naive teenager. Despite these criticisms, see it.

One of the BEST!
23 September 2003
I can't forget this film due to it's honesty and simplicity in dealing with a man who protects his family at any cost. Milland and cast are absolutely superb.Milland also directed. Suspense with no surcease from beginning to end. I believe that any man would do just as Milland's character did. This is truly a classic and much better than some so called "A" films.

Top Gun (1986)

I'd have liked to have given it a 10
20 August 2003
Well done with fine effects and action scenes. My only three criticisms are 1.Little Tom Cruise at 5'6" romantically involved with 5'10" Kelley McGillis who is also 5 years older than Tom. ????

2.A woman who has never flown instructing Top Gun pilots. In what ????

3.That god-awful song "Great Balls of Fire."

Other than the above I enjoyed it immensely. Tom Skeritt,Michael Ironside and Val Kilmer deserve kudos as does the rest of the cast along with some mighty fancy flying.

Not only the best in it's genre but one of the greatest!
20 August 2003
I cannot say enough about how superb this film is. Right from the onset it creates a mood and sustains it througout. I had no idea of the amount of suspense. It wrings you dry. Clint was marvelous and absolutely real in the role of Dave Garver. Donna Mills, excellent, Al Monte very funny and the rest of the cast just great. No I didn't forget one of the most real portrayals ever. Jessica Walter as Evelyn Draper. She left an impression on me so much that when I've seen her in other roles I still feel shudders. If there was anyone who ever deserved an academy award for a role it was Jessica Walter for that one.

A strange film with a strange, but magnificent, performance by Bill

Holden. Too bad Holden didn't win Best Actor Award for this instead of

Stalag 17. This is a haunting piece which takes us into the mystic past of a once

great star and the Hollywood of the twenties. It's as if we open an

Egyptian tomb and are overpowered with the miasma.

I saw it when it first appeared and STILL if holds. It's a timeless

classic. Let's not forget Gloria Swanson who also should have won Best

Actress Award. Just a superb film in all as

You talk about excitement????
11 July 2003
From beginning to end this brilliant script twists you till you squeak! Not only the script but the masterful direction by Rudolph Mate and the absolutely "no letup" Performance by Edmond O'Brien as Frank Bigelow, the central character.

Kudos to Neville Brand as the giggling, sadistic, psycho.

They just don't make 'em like this anymore. Now you get cheap, contrived, pornographic, claptrap with the central hero walking thru walls and killing all in his way.

Flawless
11 July 2003
What a film! Saw it when a kid and still watch it. Maybe Victor Mature's finest portrayal and certainly Richard Widmark's decidedly auspicious debut. The twisting suspense commences right from the onset. Marvelous casting and direction. Pacing, timing, camera work. The finely delineated characters hold from the beginning.

Just FYI Widmark did that character in two other films. "O'Henry's Full House", and "Roadhouse" with Cornell Wilde. Maybe the best film noir and if not certainly one of.

Just because it's Hitch doesn't mean it's good!
8 July 2003
I consider this one of Hitch's below average films. Why would a gorgeous and highly bred woman like Grace Kelley put up with a nerd photographer in a little room who's a Peeping Tom?? If Mitchum or Douglas played him........Maybe yes. I think Stewart is great But he IS the greatest portrayer of nerds and silly men.

I find the film contrived and boring. What's with Raymond Burr and the snow white hair??

It's OK for a one time look at.

Wish I could have given it a ten........................
8 July 2003
but I can't due to the mis-casting of either Gary Cooper or Grace Kelley. Why did they cast Cooper who is 27 years older than Kelley and almost looked like her grandfather? Select a younger man maybe Peck, Mitchum, Ford or Holden. OR Make the girl older around 35 perhaps with a little girl or boy. It just looked ridiculous! Other than those criticisms it was wonderful. Everybody was superb, acting and production wise. What adds the final frosting on the cake is the editing and the music. It's truly a classic.

It still sends shivers up and down
8 July 2003
I first saw this when I was seven and spent days following under the bed peeking out.

Of it's genre, it's the best ever made. James Whale, the director, shows genius in every film he's ever directed. Boris Karloff, with the aid of his makeup man, is the most grusome and just plain scary of all film creations. The shadows in the camera work, the music and the cast makes this the daddy of all horror films. Nothing has touched it so far.

This is a TRUE screen gem!
2 July 2003
What a captivating film with all systems on go. I was a kid when I first saw it and after all these years it still creates a mood for me viewing the Salinas Valley in 1917. Casting was brilliant except for Julie Harris four years older than Dean buttttttttt we'll let it pass this time. Why do they do that?

Truly a masterpiece.

Just about a number 10
27 June 2003
I gave this super film an 8 because of two miscast characters. First why Montgomery Clift as a boxer. They cast this puny little person in two films as a boxer. Why? The other was "The Young Lions." I like Clift's work but don't make him a fighter. They might have considered James Dean or Paul Newman for the role of Prewitt.

I don't care if Sinatra did win the BSAA for Maggio. He, not only was too old but, he was hammy. I'd have liked to have seen Tony Curtis or maybe John Derek in the role.

Lancaster WAS 1st Sgt. Warden and kudos to Ernest Borgnine as "Fatso Judson." Deborah Kerr, Donna Reed and all the rest of the actors were well cast and did superb jobs.

The film depicts our prewar army with reality. It's filled with action from start to finish mingled with romance and some sub plots. A real winner.

This is pure genius!
26 June 2003
I first saw this in a drive in and was ready to leave after sitting thru 2 hours of "Cast a Giant Shadow." But let's give it a chance. My hands were on the steering wheel from beginning to end. The tension never abated. Cornel Wilde and Ken Gampu were the leads as were the other members of the tribe trying to kill Wilde.

I couldn't believe the excitement in every scene. I have a tape of it and watch it now and then to prove that films were once great.

And what a race!
26 June 2003
I can't give enough kudos to this very funny film. My only criticism is that Jack Lemmon started on a high level and had nowhere to go. His constant yelling finally got on my nerves.

Other than that it's s delight and filled with shtik. Curtis, Wood, Lemmon and Falk carry the load without faltering.Everyone else is great with a special mention to Larry Storch "Ah need some fightin' room!"

A true timless classic and don't forget the cars.

Zulu (1964)

A rare combination of excitement and truth!
25 June 2003
Not only was this a true depiction of 190 British soldiers against a thousand or more Zulus but it was shot at Roark's drift where it actually occured on Jan22/23/1879.

The casting is superb with special kudos to Nigel Greene as Colour Sergeant Frank Bourne. Bourne, incidentally, was the last surviving member of that battle dying in 1946 at age 91 with the rank of Lt.Col.

A no flaw film with a plethora of gripping excitement from start to finish. Stanley Baker as always is dynamic. Caine in his first role also is very good. Direction, camera, timing, pacing and editing all deserve a big hand!

Rebecca (1940)
10/10
A haunting mystery with a touch of the comedic.
25 June 2003
Rebecca is certainly one of Hitch's best. What a debut for his American entrance. Casting is brilliant. Joan Fontaine was perfect as the lovely, but mousie, little companion who is forced into the millieu of the upper classes of England. She displays that apprehension with total believeability.

Of course there's George Sanders eating chicken in the Rolls Royce. No one,but no one, can eat on the screen like him. He also eats in Samson and Delilah" playing the Saran.

If you havent seen this masterpiece please do. It's wonderful.

WOW!
24 June 2003
This really impressed me when first I viewed it in '74. The real standout was William Devane as JFK. One of the most realistic pieces of casting and portrayls I've seen! Only on the close ups could you tell that it was Devane. His accent and demeanour were perfection. In other words he was JFK!

Everyone else was superb as was the story, camera work, direction etc. The casting was brilliant and more than that REAL! This was truly a winner from start to finish.

Missed a ten by one point
24 June 2003
And the reason is miscasting Victor McLaglen and Ward Bond whose roles

should have been switched. Victor was just "TOO OLD" for the part which

really came to the fore in the fight scene. He should have played the

priest leaving the role of Red Will to Ward Bond which would have been

truly believeable. Ward Bond would have been just as comedic and

menacing as Vic, maybe even more.

Other than the above.WHAT A DELIGHT! Kudos to all connected with that

wonderful

Almost perfect!
16 June 2003
I rated this film with a 9 only because of the mis-casting of Horst Bucholtz as a Mexican. Why do they do this? He came off as a young SS officer. If one can forgive this mistake the film is one of the greatest westerns made along with Shane, Red River etc.

One of the most dynamic music scores along with editing, camera work, pacing and except for the above, casting. Special kudos to Eli Wallach as Calvera. Everyone else was cast perfectly. It's truly a piece of cinema you can watch anytime and over again.

Interesting to note the rise of several men after this film was released. McQueen, Bronson, Coburn, and Vaughn. Bryner and Dexter were already established.

Don't we wish???
5 June 2003
Dynamite entertainment with super performances by all. Special mention for David Soul and Felton Perry.

This could be a VERY REAL situation as was mentioned in the film. A squad that carries out justice when lying lawyers and jaded judges put the cuffs on the police instead of the criminals. A serious movement is developing in this country for justice and retribution instead of insane and illogical pity for these animals

The only disappointing aspect of the film is the ending when Harry should have joined with Briggs and the boys. What a sequel that would have made!!
