Sanjuro (1962)
10/10
Classic Samurai tale with light-hearted moments
29 July 2006
I hadn't seen this film in MANY years -- and was amazed at how memorable the storyline was. And the story is easy to follow, if you'll just pay attention to the opening 10 minutes.

I can only wonder how this movie was embraced by Japanese theatergoers, in Kurosawa's use of humor and irony. If you loved Mifune's roughness in Yojimbo, you will appreciate "Sanjuro".

Great supporting cast. Includes many faces you'll recall, as well as the incomparable Tatsuya Nakadai and Yuzo Kayama. In fact, Nakadai won "Best Actor" honors that year in the Kinema Junpo Award.

Music was "off" but you can't have everything! Here's an interesting tidbit -- nearly 25 years later, both screenwriters, Kurosawa and Ryuzo Kikushima co-wrote "Runaway Train".

Ignore the negative remarks. This is interesting.
18 May 2000
It seems a lot of naysayers stuffed the ballot.

In the video stores, I had walked past "The Omega Code", solely due to imDB's poor ratings -- and I seriously question the sincerity of those remarks, most of them vicious or exagerrated. "The Omega Code" is worthy of your time. The screenplay is fluid, and the graphics and cinematography are first rate.

I've seen a lot of films made by cheesy independent filmmakers, and this is NOT one of them. Honestly, with all the hype given to dreary "films" like 'Blair Witch Project', (and the lemmings' response to it), why would you be reluctant to stay away from "Omega Code"?

Scholars worldwide ARE deciphering the Bible, and there does appear to be a systematic Authorship behind the words. Will current events manifest into a future as envisioned by "Omega Code"?

For sure, this film makes you think about it.

Why do moviegoers insist on comparing this to the others?
25 March 2000
Watching "Episode One" with my sons, I fed off their awe and wonderment.

Most PG films are not meant to be viewed through the eyes of an adult. Nor reviewed by "grownups".

Remember when you first walked out of Episode IV? I grew to like the film, but I wasn't especially thrilled by the shoot-'em up stuff. However, I was far more impressed with Episode I. Of course, technological advances have made this a far superior product.

"Episode One" (overly attacked by politically correct nabobs), HAS substance. A child, watching this movie, walks away inspired by Anakin. Both Anakin and Qui-gon (Liam Neeson's character) are excellent role models. Heroic, silent, thoughtful, moved by moral choices.

My kids, raised in a diverse environment, did not see the demons raised by the film critics. They saw a Universe, populated by good and bad. And they choose to follow the path of the Jedi.

Between Time and Timbuktu (1972 TV Movie)
Worth seeing once. (Truly)
31 January 2000
Saw this in a revival theatre. I was mentally (you know) ready for a sci-fi film and totally enjoyed it.

I don't know if I would "buy" the premise of the story today, but the time travel venues were thought provoking. Food for thought for a (then)-seeking youth.

Fearless (1993)
10/10
Weir finally got his apocalyptic vision: A happy ending.
9 January 2000
Yes, I gave it a 10 -- but that's my vision of the End.

And Director Peter Weir, after stumbling over the Apocalypse in films like "The Last Wave", finally got it right.

As we discover in "Fearless", life has its disappointments, even its tragedies. But you don't need to focus on them, or expect the worst in all things.

This is an upbeat movie, yet totally believable. "Fearless" reminds us that we need to get involved in the lives of others. At the same time, remembering who has undeniably been placed in our everyday lives as well.

A disappointment. Nice touch on early L.A.
8 January 2000
If you like cyber films, or time travel pieces, this one falls short.

Story line is inconsistent and lead actor isn't credible.

I saw "Thirteenth" at the theatre. Before "The Matrix".

So I was ripe for a fresh experience. And walked out unsatisfied.

The cinematography, however, is excellent. Traveling into old Los Angeles was enjoyable. I wish I'd spent more time there.

I can't put my finger on what didn't work. It's been months since I saw this film, and I'm not in a hurry to see it on video.

This film is like an excellent, five-course meal.
8 January 2000
Considering hundreds of thousands have made this their top 4 all-time film, there isn't much that I can add -- that hasn't already been said (or known).

Acting -- from lead to support: superb. What works the best is the obvious interaction between Robbins and Freeman, and the internal mechanisms taking place within themselves and the other.

Screenplay -- Intelligent, eternal, interesting sub-plots, gripping, classic conflicts being resolved in a satisfying manner. My only beef with the script is Freeman's final statement to the parole board. I realize its irony, but didn't consider it credible.

Cinematography -- Every camera angle is well framed, positioned or filtered in choice moments.

This film is an emotionally satisfying experience that leaves one feeling good about life and its possibilities.

What a wonderful ending.

"Not as good as 'Wings' " -- don't listen to that.
22 September 1999
OK -- so maybe I was generous. But it really hit the spot, intellectually and visually.

Like I said, don't listen to the "not as good as the original". This not only does better than most sequels, but "scores" as a logical and emotional continuation.

I haven't seen "City of Angels" (you know, the American remake), yet, "In weiter Ferne .." seems closer to "Angels" than "Wings".

This is classic Wenders -- slow developing, ponderous, yet emotive. Great cinematography, editing, screen writing.

And yes, Peter Falk is great in his in-and-out appearances.

This review may not be a "10", but like the shrugs you've heard about this film -- don't let it prevent you from a memorable evening.

Wrong Move (1975)
An interesting journey -- worth seeing once.
22 September 1999
I wouldn't call it a masterpiece.

And, to be honest with you, I haven't seen "The Wrong Move" in many years.

That said, I possibly lacked the life experience(s) to understand the unspoken message. But I did find the "freeflow" aspect of the journey interesting. Certain visual images along the way were filmed matter-of-fact, like Truffaut's characters who appear dramatically and yet, have no actual connection to the story.

I remember feeling unsatisfied with the film's resolution. (How the "journey" was resolved). But then again, perhaps it was unrealistic to expect anything else.

Of course it's good -- it's Wenders!
22 September 1999
I saw "2000" just once, yet, like all Wenders' films, I still remember glimpses.

"The Wrong Move(ment)" was the feature attraction, it was 1978, and they were a good pair. "2000" is essentially a 20-minute musical journey.

Traveling thru the deep South, with a bluesy, rambling pace to it. A Dylanesque character .. who's "got no expectations, to pass .. this way .. again" (yes, music by the Stones and Hendrix).

I didn't realize the "film" was shot in 1969. It could pass for a student film, but then again, it's Wenders.

Definitely worth seeing. Not for someone in a rush. A good companion for an evening of subdued reflecting.
