Grosse Pointe Blank (1997)
Absolutely brilliant.
An excellent film, the cast is great with Akroyd delivering a great performance as the hitman who wants to start a Union. John Cusack is excellent as I think he always is. The music is great and completely suitable for the jaunty nature of the film. A film about a hitman going to his high school re-union is hardly the stuff of the usual comedy but GPB manages to pull it off with style. The action takes place in a comic world where we don't take Martin's actions too seriously but manages to introduce enough doubt in places as to whether we should really be finding this funny to keep the film interesting throughout. A truly original film, not necessarily just for the plot but for the whole ambience and character. Oh and Cusack is the coolest hitman of all time (even eclipsing Lee Marvin in Boormans 'Point Blank').
Swingers (1996)
It's so money and it doesn't even know it.
This film manages to be a character driven "indie" on a low budget without ever being contrived or trying to be too clever, Vince Vaughn is the personification of cool and Favreau plays the Allen-tinged hapless romantic with subtlety. An excellent example of how to make a great entertaining movie on a moderate budget without reverting to arty cliches. The cinematography is also great fun and expertly managed. A great film on all counts, make sure you see it if you haven't already.
The Experts (1989)
Laughable
This has to be one of the most patently laughable cold war induced pieces of tripe I have ever seen. The principal idea of a seemingly 50's American town which is secretly in Russia with none of the inhabitants being aware is not a particularly bad one if it had been treated with a different director, different cast and not as a comedy. I defy anyone to watch Travolta's "I love America..." speech without falling into uncontrollable fits of laughter, the problem is that bit isn't supposed to be funny.
