Nocturne (1946)
Laughable
I was really interested in seeing this film as I had heard it was a departure for George Raft. I like seeing actors play out of type. Often their thrill of getting out of the box is palpable. But Raft seems WAY out of his element. At times it seems to work, others it borders on comical/rediculous. It doesn't work at all.
Also not helping this fish-out-of-water is the fact that the film is dull, dull, dull. It crawls along at a snail's pace and then the payoff is weak.
Among Giants (1998)
Why the negative reaction?
I really don't understand why this film has received such generally negative reaction. I agree that it does bog down in a couple of places, and maybe some of the charactors could have been developed in a litte more detail, but Postelwaite and Griffiths are thoroughly engrossing.
Also, the film is visually very interesting. Someone has a real eye for shot construction.
After looking at the user ratings, I was expecting to be disappointed. I wasn't.
Confederation Park (1999)
Oddly intriguing
I found this film oddly intriguing and occasionally thought provoking. Many of the shot constructions were brilliant. Good eye. I have no idea if the film captures the spirit of the place, but I now feel like I have been there.
8 ½ Women (1999)
From a Greenaway fan
To borrow from Dorothy Parker: This is not a film to be tossed aside
lightly. It should be thrown with great force.
This is an excruciating mess. And I'm a Greenaway fan.
MIND-NUMBINGLY AWFUL
"The Mummy Returns" has much more artistic merit
Lola rennt (1998)
Lola Rennt Indeed
This is a film about hope, chance, odds, fate, action, and determination. It is a film about the relevence of belief, station, love, and fortitude. We don't know much about Lola, but through her actions, we learn the depth of her love for Manni. This is "Pulp Fiction" meets "Trainspotting" meets "A Hard Days Night". This is the most original and inventive film I've seen in years
