Sibirskiy tsiryulnik (1998)
ugly and tasteless
Ugly and tasteless... This movie is a mixture of too many styles at once, and not very well mixed, like a bad cake with clusters of soda, sugar and salt. The horror, the horror! If you want to watch some movie about Russia or just want to sample some foreign cinematograph, please, do not choose this movie. I watched it for 3 hours and was reminded all the time about one scene in "Amadeus" - the scene where Salieri represents his opera, also a bad mixture of too many styles and a lot of pathos. Mikhalkov is a tasteless Antonio Salieri of Russian cinema.
Maria, Mirabella (1981)
full of magic
I watched it almost twenty years ago, and I still remember it. I'll speak not for myself but for a little child who saw this movie a life ago. I just remember that I was taken by it, by it's beauty. There was something so magical about that movie... I remember that it shook my imagination, especially the butterfly's dancing (special effects without computers %-o). It also had to do with a big deal of kindness - I guess, it was the major message from the people who created that movie. Great movie.
Dead Poets Society (1989)
if you can laugh, if you can cry, you're still alive
This movie is like a touchstone. If you can laugh, if you are able to cry with it then you are still alive. It is somewhat theatrical, but it is a movie about the poetry, among other things. It says also so much about life and freedom that you are not going to forget it, ever.
