Not For Adults
19 September 2004
I had high hopes for this movie - way too high.

I loved old sci-fi serials, and I knew that I would love the distinctive visual look of this film - but my fears were confirmed after the first big robot attack. It's pure eye-candy with the flimsiest story possible.

Once I mentally checked out of the film, I just waited for the next big set piece - here's the ice scene, here's the underwater scene, here's the dinosaur scene, etc.

Kids, young pre-teens to be exact, might love the action and excitement of this movie, but adults will not. But, shouldn't this movie appeal to adults as well, particularly those people with fond memories of the kinds of B-movies that this movie is imitating? For adults, this movie sorely needed better acting and a better plot.

Ultra-Cool Bollywood Gangster Flick
10 January 2003
Looking for a cool, stylish, action-packed Bollywood flick with some memorable musical numbers? "Qurbani" fits the bill.

I rented this from an Indian video store in town, on the advice of my wife. The DVD is pretty easy to find and has English subtitles.

The music is exceptional. Several of the tracks were lifted for the cult-classic compilation "Bombay the Hard Way," and I was shocked at how much of that album came directly from this film. There are at least three musical numbers which will leave a vivid impression on you - particularly a disco number with trippy visuals.

The action also doesn't disappoint, and there's a leg-breaking scene that's surprisingly intense. This is one Bollywood classic that I actually think is worth owning.

Eee-yuck

This is a truly awful, boring mess of a movie.

It features the notorious Sartana character, played by Gianni Garko in a number of films. In this movie, Sartana displays none of the flair of Garko. He doesn't even wear the official, all-black Sartana uniform. This third-rate spaghetti western was made solely to cash in on the fame of Sartana, and it's a poorly done rip-off.

If you want to watch a tedious film, filled with lots of stuntmen flailing their arms as they pretend to get shot, this is for you. Everyone else avoid this.

Mostly Music - Little Plot
30 June 2001
I enjoyed this film, but I'm particularly interested in the black western genre, so my reaction is probably not typical.

This is not so much of a movie as a musical revue, featuring Louis Jordan's and his band. They spend a lot of time at a ranch, wearing western clothes and performing great music. There are some horseback chases at the end, when a flimsy plot is interspersed into the film. It's an extremely low-budget affair, and looks like the whole movie was shot over the course of a weekend at a dude ranch.

The music is a lot of fun, and this film really made me smile. Two of the actors, Tom Southern and Maceo Sheffield, also appeared in the Herb Jeffries' black westerns of the late 30s.

And, there is a topless woman in the film that I was totally not expecting.

Delicious Piece of Trash
1 February 2001
I have to admit, I'm rather shocked by the other comments left for this movie. I watched it on video last night, and greatly enjoyed it, but it's by no means a "great film."

Eve Plumb's acting is truly atrocious. I never really paid attention to her acting on the Brady Bunch, but she's absolutely wretched in this movie, (in an oh-so-enjoyable way.) The dialogue is also hilariously bad. And, any movie that has a midget in the opening few minutes is a winner in my book.

Yes, this is definitely a camp classic. Worth seeking out for fans of bad movies.

Hilarious Insanity
23 September 2000
I saw this short last night at the Silent Movie Theatre in Los Angeles. They screened five shorts made by Charley Chase, and this was one of the best, (also great was "Mighty Like a Moose.")

The scenes of Charley acting insane are fantastic. Words don't do justice to the memorable physical comedy in this film. Oliver Hardy has a small, but significant, role. Definitely worth seeking out.

The Plan 9 of Jungle Movies
3 August 2000
I bought this movie after seeing it described in a catalog as the "Plan 9" of jungle movies. I'm pleased to say that I was not disappointed. This piece of cinematic shlock is every bit as laughably bad as Ed Wood's sci-fi epic.

The plot of this movie is pretty much irrelevant. Basically, the film makers took a few actors, shot them standing around a forest, then intercut this material with stock footage of Africa. The discrepancy between the two types of footage is extremely obvious, and pretty darn funny.

Like many other exploitation movies, this movie also features a fair amount of topless females. We get to see several pair of African breasts. However, when Velda, played by a white actress, goes topless, her goodies are carefully shielded by tall grass.

Is this a bit racist? Yes, but not nearly as racist as the rambling prologue to this movie which features white actors in "brown-face" makeup, pretending to be Indians.

The movie also features perhaps the worst gorilla costumes you have ever seen.

Connoisseurs of bad cinema will enjoy the varied treats of "Untamed Mistress." All others should avoid this like the plague.

The Last Cigarette (I) (1999)

Way Toooo Long
7 June 2000
I realize that this comment area is not meant to function as a message board, but I feel compelled to respond to the previous user's comment. (That "The Last Cigarette" doesn't drag.)

I started off liking this nifty compilation of stock footage and commercials, but I couldn't believe how long it dragged out. I saw this at a screening at the Director's Guild in LA, so I couldn't just walk out. Basically, it's about three times as long as it needs to be. Long after the film has made it's obvious point, (Tobacco companies lie - surprise!), the film continues to chug along, making the same point with a seemingly endless montage of stock footage.

Creepy Spaghetti Western
20 March 2000
This unusual horror film is one of the best examples of the spaghetti western genre. The plot is the standard "lone stranger seeking revenge," but in this instance, it's not clear if the stranger is a man or just a ghost. This aspect of the story, which is heightened by spooky music and scenes in fog-filled cemeteries, really sets this film apart.

The soundtrack is also excellent, with lots of distorted guitars and sci-fi organ music.

Mystery Ranch (1932)

Great Gothic Western
17 March 2000
I was interested in seeing this film for one reason and one reason alone, Charles Middleton. "Flash Gordon" is without a doubt one of my all-time favorite films, and I was curious to check out some other work by the actor who played Ming the Merciless, one of the greatest villains in cinema.

"Mystery Ranch" did not disappoint, and I highly recommend this creepy, gothic western to anyone who appreciates unusual films. Parts of this movie are more like a horror film than a standard western, and there are some great, atmospheric scenes. The ending of the movie is also quite memorable.

"Mystery Ranch" is included in the book "Forgotten Horrors," which documents many poverty-row talkies of the early 30s. Both the book and this movie are worth seeking out.

Bombay to Goa (1972)
Some Great Tunes
1 December 1999
Even though I don't speak much Hindi, I got a big kick out of this movie. My mother-in-law, who was born in India, rented this title on DVD and watched it while she was visiting us.

I was busy doing something on my computer, while she watched the movie in the background. The unusual songs caught my ear, and I ended up watching much of the movie with her. The title song, "Bombay to Goa," is a note-for-note cover of the Beach Boys' "Help Me Rhonda." The lyrics have been changed, but the melody is clearly the same.

Another song is a medley of old rock-n-roll tunes, sung in English, by an Indian woman in a nightclub. She did a few bars from a song which I believe is called "Jezebel." I have a version from Herman's Hermits. It was very odd to hear this 60s garage song in a Bollywood musical. The same medley also included a portion of "Fever," also sung in English.

Did I see the Same Movie??
8 October 1999
I read the previous comments on this movie, and I am quite shocked. Did I see the same movie as these other folks?

I found "Conan the Barbarian" to be painfully slow. Very little happens until the final twenty minutes, and by that point, I was fighting to keep my eyes open. I enjoy trashy, B-films more than the average film fan, so I was surprised at how much I disliked this turkey. The sequel is much sillier and over-the-top, and consequently, much more enjoyable.

I get the distinct impression that the filmmakers wanted to distance themselves from the oft-mocked "sword and sandal" flicks of earlier decades, so they tried to make this a "serious fantasy" film. I think they failed miserably. Way too much drama, way too much romance, and far too little violence.

Great Slice of Hollywood History
5 October 1999
This documentary is a great fun for pop culture buffs, or anyone who loves old Hollywood. Chasen's restaurant has been a Los Angeles institution for decades, and the filmmakers interview many of the waiters, cooks, bartender, etc. who've worked there over the years, along with interviews with numerous celebrities. Most memorable is a bitchy queen, Raymond Bilbool, who ran the wait staff for many years and has lots to dish about. Someone could write a sitcom based on this character.

Overall, it's a very solid documentary that packs plenty of entertainment into its short running time.

Interesting Trash
7 September 1999
I don't know what possessed me to pick up this movie from the video store, but it turned out to be an interesting, and enjoyable, flick. I think I would have enjoyed it much more, if the video transfer hadn't been of such poor quality. This otherwise routine sword-and-sandal film is livened up the truly bizarre villain and some excellent music. One tune in particular, which plays while a slave girl dances, wouldn't sound out of place on a Ventures album, or a compilation of surf tunes.

The story concerns Goliath's attempt to rescue the women of his village who were kidnapped as part of a diabolical scheme by the wizard Kobrak. The villain wants to use their blood to power his army of robots. (In this movie, robots run on human blood.) In the final scene, Kobrak changes into Goliath's shape. Goliath must then do battle with himself.

Entertaining Propaganda
14 May 1999
I stumbled across this film on cable and was immediately hooked. Created as a propaganda film to show the horrors of living in Nazi Germany, it seems quite naive in retrospect, as the full atrocities of the Holocaust were not yet public knowledge. Subtle, it is not, but it is definitely interesting as a historical novelty.

Only a Fool Would Sit Through This
21 April 1999
Yawn. This movie is a real snoozefest. As someone who is in an interracial marriage, I was curious to see how this movie handled this issue. Had it not been for this personal reason, there is no way I could have sat through this incredibly boring movie. The only parts of the movie that really made me laugh were the few scenes with Alex Whitman (Matthew Perry's) parents. These couple of pages had some real energy to them. Too bad the rest of the movie did not.

Yet Another Classic Cagney Flick
21 April 1999
This film definitely deserves its status as a classic. There are a few slow parts, such as a basketball scene that overstays its welcome by several minutes, but Cagney's great performance more than makes up for any flaws. The final moments are quite riveting.

Devil Monster (1946)

Grade Z Novelty
9 April 1999
"Plan 9" may be the best-known bad film of all time, but "Devil Monster" is an infinitely worse film. Much of the movie is clearly stock footage taken from a much earlier film. Ludicrous narration tries to tie it all together, but much of this grade-Z shlockfest makes no sense. The big finale fight scene, in which a sailor grapples with the Devil Monster, has the cheapest special effects you have ever seen. A man splashing around in water is superimposed over footage of manta ray. This movie is not for everybody, but lovers of trashy cinema may find it amusing.

A Positive Review
9 April 1999
I saw this film on an extremely low-quality videotape (probably a bootleg), but the movie still held up. The story is intriguing, the music is memorable and downright creepy, and the directing is above-average. The pace drags a bit in the middle, but the final thirty minutes are definitely worth the wait.
