Next Stop Wonderland (1998)
An indie flick that is worth the hype
Every year there are numerous independent films that are really hyped up and considered must-see films. Most of them are overrated. This one is not overrated. It is well done. The acting of both lead characters is very good, conveying how they are at once satisfied with themselves, and hence don't need to cling to any other person, but are nevertheless lonely and would like to find someone to share their lives with. The subplots exist merely to deepen the understanding of the characters, to show the conflicts which they face and which shape them. The camera-work makes the film seem almost like a documentary, which helps keep it from being cheesy and highlights the natures of the various characters. Overall a well-crafted movie.
Never Been Kissed (1999)
Great fun thanks to Drew Barrymore
Drew Barrymore makes this movie fun and engaging. Some might say that this movie doesn't really have a convincing love story, but it's not really about love, despite the title. It's about Drew Barrymore's character, Josie, learning first what it's like to be popular, and second how useless it is to be popular. It's about Josie figuring out that it's better to be accepted for who you are, rather than be accepted for being what others want you to be. Drew Barrymore is absolutely adorable in the role, making it easy to sympathize with her situation. There are lots of funny moments dealing with Josie's experiencing in high school, and also lots of poignant moments. Flashbacks between Josie's current experiences in high school and her original ones help to establish her fears and dreams. The ending is a little bit cheesy, but that's typical of a teen movie. The other characters' storylines are woven in very well, enough to enhance the story and provide a foil to Josie's experiences in high school without sticking out or detracting from the main story. Overall, the movie is light-hearted and enjoyable, and well worth a watch.
