Definitely missing a piece
20 May 2004
I recently saw this movie again since it hit DVD. I'd seen it once at the theater and was less than impressed. It seems to have aged well. It was better than I remembered. Most of the cast is excellent, given that they should know these roles pretty well after playing them night after night on Broadway. One of the main problems is the absence of Nathan Lane. The play was written for him specifically. The role of Buzz is the center of the play. While Jason Alexander is a capable actor, he is no Nathan Lane. As it stands, this is a pretty good movie with most of the cast intact, but there is a substantial piece missing from the whole and it shows.

Better than I hoped
25 December 2003
Peter Pan has been one of my favorite stories since I was a kid. I've always wanted to see a live action version of the movie with a boy in the title role. (I've always found middle-aged women in the role a little creepy.) This was exactly what I've always hoped to see. Peter was portrayed as the bratty, happy, eternal boy. Jeremy Sumpter nailed Peter's moods shifting from moment to moment. This is the movie that all Pan fans should go see.

Excellent performances

This was a great movie. It's not easy to make a compelling film about journalists, because watching people type at a computer screen for two hours doesn't make exciting movie watching. This movie, however, was great. The talented cast does some of their best work with a great script. Hayden proves for once and for all that Life as a House was not a fluke and Attack of the Clones was not his fault. He is a talent with a bright future in front of him.

Terrible movie, Great Lestat
3 October 2003
As a whole this movie is pretty bad. It's a bad movie and it's a terrible Ann Rice adaptation. The one thing the movie has, however, is a dead on perfect depiction of the Lestat that has been described in numerous books. This is the erotic and beautiful character that millions of people have fallen in love with. Stuart Townsend shoots lightning bolts off of the screen. He is sex personified. If you want to watch Lestat explode off of the page and walk and talk onscreen, skip Tom Cruise and rent this movie. Actually, if you watch the DVD, make sure you check out the Lestat videos among the extras. All I can say is: Wow. Give it a watch for Stuart becoming Lestat.

Disappointing
19 February 2003
I didn't think this movie was going to be any good when I showed up at the theater. I got what I was expecting. One thing I'd like to point out is if they are going to start trying to film American movies like the Hong Kong action films, they need to get cinematographers from Hong Kong. Someone needs to be able to compensate for the American director's inability to shoot fight scenes. The fight scenes in this movie were terrible. They were too dark and murky and the camera work was horrible. They need to put a stop to trying to shoot action films like this until they can find directors who know how to set them up and film them.

Trite

Luckily I didn't go into this with expectations too high. I know what to expect from Michael Bay, and I certainly got what I expected. This 3 hour and ten minute debacle had a hackneyed script, overwhelming score, cheesy camera tricks, and high school play level acting. The dialogue sounds as though the writer sat at a desk with a pile of scripts of war films and cut and pasted virtually this entire film. Every line out of these poor actors mouths were cliches and not even good cliches. Most of the acting talent was wasted and nowhere was that more evident than poor Cuba Gooding Jr. Never have I seen an Oscar winning actor in a more thankless and useless part that any one of a dozen no name actors would have killed for. On the whole, this looks like a tremendous waste of 200 million dollars and 3 hours and ten minutes of the audiences lives.

Dogma (1999)

Kevin Smith managed to do it again
23 October 1999
I just saw the long-talked about and seemingly ever-controversial Dogma. I was highly impressed. There's been so much hype about this film, both good and bad, I was ready to be sorely disappointed. I loved Clerks, was disappointed with Mallrats, was redeemed with Chasing Amy and now he's managed to succeed yet again. All the actors we've come to know and love are back again. His troupe, just like Mel Brooks' back in the day, seem to be comfortably in place and know just what he expects from them. None of them are particularly edgy or give revelatory performances, but they give us what we want and we are entertained and perhaps take a step back and look at some things differently. All in all, this is definitely a film to see and sit back and go into the somewhat skewed brain of a fine filmmaker.

Better than expected
1 May 1999
I enjoyed the film. It's not going to win any awards, but it was entertaining. The cast is talented and they did a good job. It is pretty gory though, so anyone with a weak stomach should probably steer clear.

Liked it overall
3 April 1999
I liked this movie. The cgi was mindblowing. Some of the best and most realistic I've ever seen. The plot was a little typical. I mean the Men In Black have been used to death.
