Parents (1989)
Beautiful in its Completely Demented Nature
As I watched this film, I thought, if I was a kid around Michael's age watching this film, it would give me nightmares for years. Some good-natured books stir up the imaginations of youngsters with the possibilities of what our parents really do when they're supposedly at work--this movie takes those possibilities to an incredibly dark level.
Even though I'm supposedly all grown up, I found this to be one of the most disturbing films I've ever seen. The film is incredibly stylish and expressionistic, surprisingly so. I personally think it would be hard finding compelling aesthetics in suburbia, but the director of this movie does it well.
There are some humorous moments (thanks for the tension release), but it is incredibly dark humor. I can't help but think the director might be a "graduate" of the "school" of David Lynch. Overall, an incredible, creepy movie that deserves to be seen at least once.
The Deadly Spawn (1983)
Disgusting but enjoyable.
I think that this is yet another movie that will not appeal to anyone, except for fans of splatter/horror/science-fiction/monster type fare. Through and through, this is a B movie with obscure actors and acting that at times makes the movie difficult to watch and keep up with the dialogue. Plus, there are the anti-logical actions of characters, which the characters are only stupid enough to adopt for the sake of scaring and grossing out the audience.
The good things about this movie are some incredible and amusing special effects, and of course, lots of blood and gore. To compare movies like _Return of the Alien's Deadly Spawn_ to say, _Citizen Kane_ is pointless. _Citizen Kane_ wins hands down. However, as far as your standard B movies go, this movie is a very interesting view, worthy of an 8 vote from me.
Blue Velvet (1986)
a classic
After coming into contact with this film through a college class, I decided to check it out for myself and was very impressed. The cinematography is incredibly artistic and I don't think I'll ever see everything Lynch wanted me to see.
The characters are very fitting for Lynch. Once again, he shows the nasty underground of an otherwise very normal and hokey small town.
