The Gift (2000)

"What Lies Beneath" with a soul...
3 January 2001
A great psychological character study with supernatural overtones, this film builds a vivid and oppressive atmosphere, thanks largely to a deftly-layered performance from Cate Blanchett, and supported by strong three-dimensional characters. A thoughtful and resonant story well told.

One of the most frightening films I've ever seen...
22 June 1999
Like an episode of "The Real World" gone horribly, horribly wrong, THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT draws you from a world of bickering slacker film students and into a wilderness that is like a raw, exposed nerve of the American heartland. As things spiral out of control, if you choose to go with these characters, their panic and fear will infect you as in no other film. Without incidental music, without gory special effects, and without in-your-face shocks, this PROJECT yields unexpectedly harrowing results. If you choose to go into the woods again after seeing this film, it's more than the Big Bad Wolf that you'll fear waiting for you.

Jawbreaker (1999)
3/10
Pretty but vacuous comedy that tries to pass itself off as a latter-day HEATHERS, but is really a half-assed retread of PRETTY IN PINK.

Despite reviews and expectations to the contrary, this film is not a successor to HEATHERS. It lacks any of the earlier film's scathing commentary or shockingly morbid humor. What emerges is a CARRIE-esque revenge tale unbridled with any imagination, wit or remotely interesting characters. Still, the production design and energetic performances by Rose McGowan and Rebecca Gayheart (as the repentant good girl) almost make JAWBREAKER worth seeing...

Butch Camp (1996)

Insipid "Gaysploitation" Tripe that makes a Leg Wax look like a more appealing alternative...
16 February 1999
Whiny, annoying character somehow manages to get his dreams of seducing a straight friend come true despite having no socially-redeeming qualities whatsoever. Any possibility of identifying with the main character is completely undone by bad writing and a total dependency on cliche to define the characters.

Oh, and Judy Tenuta gets some chances to show off her standard stand-up routines in a sub-plot involving her "Butch Camp" gay-male-self-improvement courses.

Film actually succeeds in making Male Movement seminars look tame.
