Central do Brasil (1998)
Interesting and emotional
I thought Central do Brasil to be a very interesting film. You learn a lot about Brasil and their very different lifestyle. The vastness of the country, the different cultures, the crime, the economical and social changes can be seen. This makes the film already worth while seeing. In addition to this information the film is full of brilliantly acted emotions. These displayed feelings made the connection to my European life possible and I could identify with these people from distant Brasil.
My Name Is Joe (1998)
I'd like Joe as my neighbor
This movie is very much worth seeing. The film lets you feel the real difficulties in life.
Joe is the light in this film. He represents a last bit of hope. Peter Mullan is very good in this role and never gets too unrealistic like it happens so often in Hollywood movies. I'd really like a guy like him as my neighbor!
The only critic I have is regarding the story not being so very new and interesting. This fact keeps the film from being a really great movie.
Shakespeare in Love (1998)
Amusing but nothing more
I gave this film an eight as I enjoyed the movie and I liked the way the life in those days was portrayed in detail (eg even good looking guys as Shakespeare have mechanics hands). Otherwise the film did not get me really crazy. I was not fully drawn into it and it did not really touch me. I am not quite sure what's the reason for this. Perhaps it's those little things like where is all that hair under the wig, that made the film just too unrealistic.
It's worth seeing, but don't expect to wake up the next morning with your mind still fixed to the movie.
Love Is the Devil: Study for a Portrait of Francis Bacon (1998)
Good documentary but not worth seeing
I did not like this movie very much. I guess (as I don't really know the biography of Bacon) the director did a good job in his characterisation of Bacon. Nevertheless the film is not really special or interesting. I guess if you are interested in the life of Francis Bacon this movie gives you a good idea. Otherwise I would not waste the time. I gave it a five.
Jezus is een Palestijn (1999)
Ramses the looser
I gave this film a six. It's worth seeing, but don't expect too much. A laugh or two and some funny ideas (Boeing crash on Bijlmer + smoking through your legs! + the title of the film).
The thing I liked most about the movie was the characterisation of Ramses. I believe that there are a lot of people out there who feel and act the same way as he does. Ramses is a person, that chooses the easy way and thereby throws his life away. As he comes from a difficult family situation this is in some way understandable, but he goes too far. He ends up back where he started, because he does not know what to do with his life. I hope the film helps people to see this waste and change their lives.
La vita è bella (1997)
The "Nazigame" vs "Guido's game"
La vita e bella is a great film and I gave it a nine. After reading several other comments I'd like to add the following:
The aspect I liked most in the film is that Guido and his son played this game in the concentration camp.
As an Austrian I have learned a lot at school about the history of WW2. Obviously this also included the concentration camps. The existence of these camps - or better the idea of massproduction-killing-farms - had become an accepted fact. For some reason I did not think anymore about how crazy and absurd these concentration camps actually were.
When I first saw Guido and his child playing their game in the camp I thought that that was an absurd idea. Only later did I realise that their game was actually a lot less crazy than the reality.
I have become aware again how incredible it was what Hitler and lots of helping hands had tried to do. There has never been a more crazy and devilish game invented.

Festen (1998)
Suffer the camera to feel the pain
After having read some of the critics of the film I wanted to add the following: In my opinion "Festen" is not meant to be a pleasure to watch. The story it tells - or better that you are witnessing - is terribly sad. The moving camera is strenuous and difficult for the eyes, but it thereby translates the pain to the spectator. One has to suffer to understand the pain.
