Celebrity (1998)
Winona is, once again, the grounding character.
As once said about Beetlejuice, "Without Noni, the film would have floated off into the stratosphere." Sure, this film is somewhat believable - another Woody Allen masterpiece - but Winona Ryder's interpretation and presentation of her character, Nola, seems most believable. She's a desperate movie extra, accepting of any role that comes her way, even if it means lying in bed with another woman... that was hilarious! She's the most realistic, the most in-tune with reality... definitely the girl next door - or the girl I'd want next door, anyway.
How to Make an American Quilt (1995)
I love this movie!!!
Winona Ryder is truly believable as Finn Dodd; author Whitney Otto has said the same. There couldn't have been anyone more well-cast (kudos to the casting director). It's true that Winona Ryder IS my favorite actress, so maybe I'm partial to her landing that role, but, whatever... overall, it's an excellent movie. Winona Ryder, Maya Angelou, Anne Bancroft, Ellen Burstyn, Alfre Woodard, Rip Torn, Kate Nelligan, Samantha Mathis... EVERYONE in this movie makes it what it is. I've seen it 5 million times, and I still love it. I love the story line, I love the actors, I love everything about it, from the soundtrack to the title.
Reality Bites (1994)
Highly Watchable
This movie was brilliantly cast. Winona Ryder is my idol, and she was amazing in this film. Janeane Garofalo was completely believable. Ethan Hawke was beautiful. Steve Zahn was hilarious. There are so many famous cameos; I love it! The soundtrack is completely listenable-to. Every time I see this film, I love it more and more. So quotable. Maybe it wasn't highly publicized or accepted, but it's SO true to life, and SO worth the time it takes to watch. I have to admit, though, that I DID see this film for Noni... but it was well worth it in the end!
Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Winona Ryder - even as a blonde - is still excellent.
Even donned in a horrendous blonde wig and starring as the head cheerleader in a Tim Burton movie, Winona Ryder is still utterly believable (as in all of her films). I love Winona Ryder, I love Tim Burton, I love Johny Depp. This movie is a visually and emotionally stunning portrayal of true love. Sure, it's a Tim Burton movie, so how seriously can it really be taken? But it's great! So sweet... well-acted by the two main characters. Worth the time.
Heathers (1988)
I love this movie!
It's a black, cynical parody of high school life. I love it. Being a high schooler, I can say safely say I relate. The first time I saw this film, I really didn't like it, but it has meaning. The cult-like cliques of school are captured amazingly, and so is the deeply-embedded hatred for them; hatred from the outsiders, and even the insiders. Winona Ryder gives, as usual, an excellent portrayal of her character, Veronica Sawyer. She and Christian Slater (J.D.) play very well off each other. I love it... so quotable.
Beetlejuice (1988)
Lydia Deetz is my idol.
"My whole life is a darkroom. One... big... dark... room." Winona Ryder was perfectly cast as the morose outsider of Beetlejuice. She can do anything. True, Winona is actually my idol, but that has nothing to do with how great this film is. I've liked this movie since I was 5 years old... before I knew who Winona Ryder was. Tim Burton is the epitome of a great filmmaker (Edward Scissorhands) and Michael Keaton is totally Beetlejuice. Alec Baldwin is SO Adam Maitland - I have yet to see him in a better role. Everything about this film is great. I love it!
