The Sweet Hereafter (1997)
Sad and serious
I wasn't expecting such a sad and serious film. Filled with glimpses into the lives of seemingly normal people, this story reveals secrets, burdens and pain. And a tragedy brings a lawyer (with his own sorrow) into a small community, encouraging the members to allow him to "focus their anger", to make those responsible pay. Does anyone have any idea that a child will do just that?
The Spanish Prisoner (1997)
Stick with it
I absolutely hated the first 10-15 minutes or so for two reasons: 1) everyone's acting seemed very weird, deliveries were all in odd monotones and half-sentences. 2) I had absolutely no idea what was going on. Soon I was able to get used to the acting and follow the story. There was about a half hour there where things were really exciting and tricky, things were really coming together, which was great. But near the very end, when it was necessary to try and tie up the loose ends, things got pretty obvious and credibility was stretched. Which is OK, I was certainly entertained and was never expecting perfection! I liked the music, hated the girl, liked the obliging hero, and adored Steve Martin, as always. You'll have fun discussing it with a bud afterwards.
A Passage to India (1984)
Different than expected
Not at all as I expected it to be. An eager-to-please Indian doctor is befriended by a kind, elderly British lady, with unexpected (to say the least) results. Slow-going at times, and a "Hitchcock" feel to a few tense scenes. The doctor's deference to the English was sometimes painful to watch, and I'm still left baffled by Miss Quested's actions (what was she thinking, what really happened up in that cave?) but I did find the story interesting, and Ms. Davis' acting perfect. Have to say I suffered through every scene with Mr. Guinness, who was ridiculous as an odd Indian professor. All in all, a strange film, bringing out the clash of the cultures at that time.
Mirage (1965)
Who is he?
Suspenseful story of a suave gentleman who seems to be coming out of amnesia after 2 years. He needs answers, but nobody seems able, or willing, to provide him with any. Some very tense moments, lightened with lots of clever and entertaining dialog, held my interest from start to finish.
