Reality Bites (1994)
One of life's details to take pleasure in
I'll admit that I'm not really a member of the generation this movie was intended to "speak to" but oddly enough I find it amazingly easy to relate to. A friend of mine was the one who initially suggested I see it, claiming that I'd love it since it's a lot like the other movies that my group of friends love like "Empire Records" and such. So one day I was browsing through the videos at Blockbuster when I remembered that she'd recommended it. I rented it right there and hurried home to pop it into the VCR. And it was amazing. It was, at times, oddly close to the way my friends and I act (without the drugs part). We've been known to sit around and sing strange songs like "Conjunction Junction" and "Bad Boys (The Theme from Cops)" while in restaurants just because we felt like it. And the movie really captures the whole point of doing things like that, the freedom of just having fun with your friends.
The cynicism of it all is perfect as it somehow blends with their moments of friendship and fun. They claim the entire time that their lives suck but, like most people, they don't seem to realize when they're really enjoying themselves until they can look back later and say "Why didn't appreciate my happiness then?"
The acting and over-all characters was very well down. The complaints that most people seem to have in this area is that Ben Stiller's character seemed, to them, to be the better choice. He was, after all, a nice guy. Why didn't she choose him? The answer's simple; she didn't love him. Love doesn't care how many other "nice guys" you meet. It only cares about emotions, not logic. So yeah, he treated her horribly. He broke her heart again and again. But she'll still come back to him. And that's because that's what love is. And she'll break -his- heart again and again and he'll still come back. It doesn't bother with anything aside from pure emotion and feelings. That's why it hurts so much and this movie captured it perfectly.
So what I'm getting at is, yeah, it has flaws, all movies do. But it also maintains a clear and wonderful message without having to force it down your throat. I most defiantly recommend it.
Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998)
Rather disappointing and dull
I was really looking forward to this one and found it sadly disappointing. The acting was decent I suppose but it was rather difficult to tell with the script they had to work with.
The plot is nothing new. Now I wouldn't say I get bothered easily by movie violence, wouldn't say it at all since I can usually watch most stuff without flinching. But something about this one's death scenes bothers me. I finally realized that it's the slightly sadistic way that some of the victims ended up begging for their life. I don't know just something about that seems all too disturbing... maybe it's just me.
The only part I actually liked was when Laurie confronted Michael, leading to a slightly exciting, yet predictable, ending.
Considering all this and adding in the fact that it's pathetically short, this movie ends up being worth seeing once just to see the end.. if that. Of course there are friends of mine who claim to love it (but I think that's just because of Josh Hartnett, eh?).
Freeway (1996)
Amazingly well written with extraordinary acting!
I started watching this movie at 2:30 at night and wouldn't go to bed until it was over.I loved it!It seems to me that there really aren't enough movies like this where the main character isn't perfect.I felt that all the acting was amazing (it's fun to see how many actors/actresses you can recognize in this one because there're a lot). The main character is greatly written. When I saw it I found it extremely hard not to feel bad for her no matter what happened. She has one of those horrible lives that you can't help but feel bad about.Great movie which you should definitely see!!
Dawson's Creek (1998)
One of the best shows on Television!
I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!OK now that we've got that out of the way I'd like to tell you why.First of all Kevin W.'s witty and intelligent writing style give the characters a real sense of personality.Second the young actors and actresses are extremely talented(in fact Katie Holmes happens to be one of my favorite actresses:).Finally I would like to compliment the show's honesty.Instead of talking down to teens in a condescending manner this show's very upfront and direct. It's willing to say things that others might be afraid of saying.Dawson's Creek is one of the best shows to come along in awhile.I love it:)
The Faculty (1998)
Kevin W.'s amazing talent combined with an extremely talented cast makes for a movie that's worth seeing at least once!!
I found The Faculty to be quite entertaining.I'll admit that its plot's not very original but it's still enjoyable. Some people might think that the plot's too similar to that of the Body Snatchers but in fact I got the impression that this was intended. This is after all a script by Kevin W.(writter of Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer),a man well known for using pop culture to write his movies.I feel that the acting in this movie was also very good. Finally I'd like to say that The Faculty is after all a science fiction type film.So if you don't enjoy these types of movies you probably shouldn't see it. Kevin W. does a marvellous job on the script with my only complant being that it's somewhat predictable. All in all I say it's a worthwhile movie and you should at least see it once and form your own opinion.
