Unbreakable (2000)
Entertaining Storytelling
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. My wife has been sick for a week and needs to see it again. I believe the perception of a movie depends on how we feel at the time. She enjoyed it but not nearly as much as I did. I will go see any movie M. Night Shyamalan makes. He has a gift for telling a story. I will see this movie again in the theatre. I loved the aspect or position M. Night takes in telling this story. I am purposely being vague because I want people to see it with no idea of the story. See it, enjoy it, draw your own conclusions. I highly recommend it. Relax and be entertained!!!
The Long Gray Line (1955)
Pleasant Surprise!!
I've been humbled! I thought of myself as a movie buff. This one slipped past me. I'm a fan of Ford and everyone in this movie. I must admit I had never heard of this movie. Terrific story telling! The music brought back a lot of memories. The old saying "they don't make 'em like that anymore" certainly applies to this one. Telling a good story and characters you care about is more important than spending $100 million. Some of our current film makers could learn from this movie. You can entertain people sitting around a camp fire telling stories. Just tell a good one and make them care. I'll be adding this film to my library!
Pitch Black (2000)
Excellent Special Effects - Entertaining
My wife and I see a lot of movies. She loved this movie. As we were walking to the car after seeing this film she said she was ready to see it again. I wasn't quite that crazy about it but it is good solid entertainment. I want to wait a week or two. The decision whether to see a movie in the theatre orwait for VHS or DVD depends on personal priorities. In my opinion this is one to see in the theatre. Dialog/emotional movies don't make that much difference on the big screen. Most movies should be seen on the big screen. They're shot with this in mind. This one will definitely lose a little effect on the small screen. So go escape for a couple of hours and enjoy yourself.
The Thin Red Line (1998)
Classic not for everybody
First, this is a very good film. Nick Nolte gives one of his best performances. But this film is not for everyone. Terrence Malick has made a film that is like a fine wine that will be appreciated with time. It's long, engaging, well written, beautifully shot, great acting, etc. Most people won't have the patience to stick with it. The numbers at the box reflect the American public (audience) and their lack of attention. Most people today don't want to be engaged, they want to escape. They don't want to think or make the effort. Now having said this let me say to the rest of you that get tired of the same old formula movies, be well rested, in a good frame of mind, and give this movie a look. It is one of the best films of the year.
The Hunt for Red October (1990)
What a Hollywood movie should be!
First, I am an amateur movie buff. I see just about every thing. I own less than 20 movie tapes. Once I've seen it, I usually don't care to see it again. Hunt For Red October is a movie I watch once a year. It's not deep or profound. It wasn't best picture. It is what modern day story telling is all about. An interesting story and characters we care about. I gave it a 9 rating because it's not the best, but it's good solid entertainment. There are all kinds of movies and all kinds of audiences. You can't be everything to every one. So for just plain old good entertainment this movie is well worth your time. Also a side note. I just finished reading the non-fiction book "Blind Man's Bluff, The Untold Story Of American Submarine Espionage" and it made the "Hunt for Red October" story even more interesting. I really didn't realize how dangerous the cold war was. Is this story possible? Definitely! Will we ever know what really went on? Probably not. But that is one aspect of this movie that makes it so interesting. Really good movies are few and far between. This is a good one!
