War of the Worlds (2019)
watch the show before reading the reviews!
I am so glad I watched the show first, then decided to have a look at the reviews on IMDB. I agree, it's not action packed, but well written and character driven as opposed to all CGI. It is a bit slow here and there....and not as per the "original " story so much but still a good solid show....I am looking forward to more episodes....
Eragon (2006)
I couldn't wait for it to end
What a shame that a fantastic book has been turned into such a dismal movie! I absolutely loved the book, and couldn't believe that the film could veer so far off track The acting was average, a lot of the film focused on showing the beautiful mountain scenery when it could have been better spent filling in some of the obvious plot holes and it seemed rushed and amateurish.. I understand there are time limits but valuable information to the film and potential future films was omitted. Even if I hadn't read the book, I still would have found the film very disappointing and lacking tension, character development and reason. If you have seen the film, forget it and go read the book if you haven't already. You will be rewarded.
Wedding Crashers (2005)
Started with promise but lost it's way
I had heard some good things about this movie when I sat down to watch it, so was looking forward to it, but still keeping an open mind. I did enjoy it to start with, it had some humorous moments and Vince Vaughn's dialogue was fast and funny. But then, it just seemed to fall into a bit of a heap, it was like the writer/s weren't sure what to do next and so had Owen Wilson's character flounder along with the script and the storyline. There was no direction to what was happening to the characters. The ending seemed to be hastily put together although it was a happy ending! Overall, not a bad film, but one that definitely had more potential!
Phone Booth (2002)
Surprisingly enjoyable..
Prior to seeing this film, I had no less than 3 separate people tell me that it was " stupid" " boring" and a "waste of time". When you hear that, you just have to make your own opinion. I sat and watched "Phone Booth" with a mild sense of sceptism, and came away at the end of it, thoroughly impressed with Colin Farrell's acting ability. Sure, the plot was a little flimsy, but it zoomed along quite nicely with a little twist at the end. Forest Whitaker again a nicely understated performance, and a few characters like the pimp and negotiator to mix it up a little. I know I will my friends will look at me in disbelief when I tell them that I thought the movie was "good", but hey, diversity of taste is what makes the world go round.
I, Robot (2004)
Under-promised and Over delivered
I went to see this film, with basically no idea of what is was about save a general outline. I wasn't really sure what to expect, I thought lots of special effects and no plot. But I can truly say that I had a great time watching this film, it had action, humour, suspense, intrigue and emotional issues, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Will Smith took on his role with his usual calibre, and created a great character for us to be involved with. The special effects were a big part of the film of course, but didn't override the idea behind the story. To me, it was money well spent, and I would recommend this film for anyone wanting to spend an enjoyable couple of hours.
Spider-Man 2 (2004)
Under promised-over delivered
I went to see SpiderMan 2, having heard reports that it wasn't as good as the first one (normally, sequels aren't!)...It's a strange thing under-expectations, as I absolutely loved it...in fact, I liked it better than the first one. Tobey Maguire was great, and sure the plot in general was a bit cliched, mad scientist and all, but the emotion and humour intertwined, made it a great movie experience. The acting all over was terrific, the special effects were magnificent, and it was no trouble to get caught up in the storyline. I gave it a 9/10. Highly recommended.
Intolerable Cruelty (2003)
Mildly amusing...
After watching this film, I think my main feeling was disappointment. Although I did enjoy the movie, I felt a little cheated, that we really didn't get to know and empathise with the characters. They were two- dimensional, and I didn't really care what happened to them in the end. The storyline and dialogue were very clever, and the whole idea was a good one, but it didn't translate well to the screen. George Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones did their best, but could not bring feeling of any kind, to the movie. The film had it's amusing moments, although it's not going to be one of my favourites! I would give it an 6.5 out of 10.
The Net (1995)
It's not rocket science but...
You could get into the nitty gritty of this film, and say how it couldn't happen, or how could the main character just walk into offices and start using computers etc without someone noticing and really pick the movie to bits...or you could just sit back with a bucket of popcorn and enjoy the story and the acting. Personally, I prefer the latter, I live real life and watch the news with all it's doom and gloom, and so would much rather be entertained by my movies, and see the bad guys get their just rewards. Don't take it too seriously, and you can thoroughly enjoy this film.
Smallville (2001)
NOT BAD!
I wasn't sure about Smallville at first, but it grows on you. Sure, it's not exactly Emmy award winning stuff, but I could think of worse things to do for an hour than watch the show. The acting is okay, the storylines are sometimes a bit average, but overall, it's an easy show to watch. Personally, I'm waiting to find out why/how Lex Luthor turns into a baddie!
Charlotte Gray (2001)
Watchable!
It's not a bad movie, not particularly spectacular by any means, but certainly watchable for some fine acting performances from Cate Blanchett and Michael Gambon. The storyline was simple enough to follow, the ending a little cliched, but hey, it's nice to have a happy ending (if only life was that easy!). I would probably say that you wouldn't have to rush to the movies to see it, and it could wait for a video/DVD release.
My Favorite Martian (1999)
Tried too hard
All I can say is I'm glad I didn't pay good money to see this, I watched it on T.V the other night. It lacked a decent script and had none of the charm of the original series. The studio sacrificed plot and character development for special effects and an attempt at slapstick. Was very disappointed in the end.
The Kid (2000)
It grew on me!
When I first started watching the film, I was a little bored and the young character of "The Kid" irritated me immensely. But as I settled in with the film, the storyline, the acting and the characters grew on me, so by the end of the film, I felt quite warm and gooey...........I think it's worth hanging in there for the full effect.
Dogma (1999)
Great idea, lousy execution!
When I saw the plot summary for this film, I thought to myself, "Great idea", look forward to watching this. But once the film started and got to about halfway through, I was quite disappointed. The couple of points that irritated me were the casting of the characters, some of them, in fact, nearly all of them, just didn't come across as the right actors for the job. Also, most of the swearing was out of place too, I'm no prude by any means, but I felt the script could have done without two thirds of the "f" word. I watched the film to the end, and felt a sense of discontent that it all really was a waste of talent and effort.
Armageddon (1998)
Sit back, tongue-in-cheek and enjoy
Armageddon will never go down in film history as the "greatest film ever made" but it certainly was good fun, filled with special effects and good characters. If you took the film seriously then it would be defeating the purpose of watching it. So suspend your sceptism regarding what should and shouldn't happen in real life, grab a bucket of popcorn and enjoy this film.
Down Periscope (1996)
Sit back and smile!
I found this to be a light-hearted comedy that was fun to watch, and didn't strain the brain too much. Good supporting cast helped it along it's way. Recommended for those seeking a casual diversion for 90 minutes or so...
The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996)
Try it, you might like it!
I sat down to watch this movie with a degree of scepticism having read previous reviews blasting it. I was pleasantly surprised and although not an earth shaking film, it was enjoyable to watch. I thought the actors came across well, it had a good combination of humour and romance, and at the end of the day, I thought I had my money's worth.
