Hit! (1973)
5/10
Good performances... Slow movie.
23 May 2000
Billy Dee's Daughter dies in heroin overdose. While beating the hell out of the dealer, he realizes that killing him won't solve the problem so he sets his sights high... At the top of the food chain.

This film runs at about 2 1/2 hours and final "Hits" take about ten minutes, so the rest of the film is setup and much of that is implausible and unfortunately very slow to develop. Billy Dee Williams however was an electric presence, very hard to take your eyes off of while on screen. A very menacing cool. Richard Pryor... What can you say, the man is an artist. While watching the film you know he was given one line and the rest he made happen with his own special magic. Just watching the guy is enough to make you laugh.

You would have expected more from the director of 'Lady Sings the Blues', but it was stellar considering the same gentleman also directed 'Superman IV'

Can't go too wrong with this one.

Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan shine together, as they both usually do - together or apart in you've got mail. A nice story, nice direction, nice music for a very nice movie. I'll admit the trendy New York city stuff in the beginning might have went over this midwestern head a bit, but otherwise this a very cute, well constructed film.

Hmmm....
18 May 1999
here's my problem with this movie. It's more of a philosophical difference than anything else. Aside from the fact that it's beautiful to behold from beginning to end, it contains a certain imaginative and original quality rarely seen any more in any films. Annabella Sciorra is wonderful and is underrated as an actress in my opinion, and Robin Williams is Harrison Ford-like in his ability to deliver time and time again. Great scene blocking too. Direction. All that stuff.

We've established that. Now to my personal problem with the film. Suicide is punishable by an eternity in hell. I don't think believe that an individual can be retrieved from those depths, though the film makes a strong case for such. But I don't believe that God would allow that (if you read the text) as it is the greatest sin you can commit against Him. But I understand the need for a happy ending and this was about as happy as they get. But I didn't like it. Like I said, it's personal, most folks would probably care less. One more thing though, You're in the hereafter with your kids, wouldn't you rather THEM go back to earth than yourselves? Heck, you've already lived your life, let them have a chance at it and see what it's like. But hey... that's just me.

The Matrix (1999)
One of the best I've seen
12 April 1999
The Matrix is one of the best films I've seen. A good film in my opinion is one you have some identity with. No, I can't identify with running on walls, shooting people and being deemed the chosen one. But I CAN identify with being trapped in a cubicle, living a life I'm certain I'm not supposed to be in, and knowing there's something more out there. Not necessarily better, but more. By now you know what it's about, not going there. But it's pulled off fabulously. They could've gone more in depth here and there, but as it was the movie was almost 2 1/2 hours long. And please, give Keanu Reeves a break, he's not Olivier but he knows how to choose roles. If you notice his better films all have a top-notch actor to carry the heavy stuff, Fishburn, Pacino, Hopper, Oldman, Morgan Freeman. Keanu uses screen presence and looks to maximum effect. The Matrix was on.

Mindless, but that's not a bad thing.
7 December 1998
Violent? yes. Unecessarily so? probably. Intelligent? no. Stylish? Oh yeah. Nice looking cast? uh huh. Action? YES! From the mind of noted music video director Antoine Fuqua comes a fast paced, violent, stylish shootemup. Want substance? go see Remains of the Day or My Left Foot. Want some escapism nonsense? Here you are. I liked it.

Much more than a 'ghetto' flick.
7 December 1998
I read a review of 'Belly' from a young lady on-line, and of it she said that it was terrible and we need more positive films. While I agree it was terrible, but what we need are better films. Menace II society is one of the most gripping films ever made. More horrifying than Freddie Kruger, Friday the 13th or whatever horror film you can name because this, unfortunately, is reality. Menace steps out of the tired rehashed 'ghetto' mentality with real characters, real motivation (whether you agree with it or not) good acting, and great writing and direction. I salute the Hughes brothers for their strength in getting a film as difficult to watch as this one on the screen. A great film, I believe, affects you once you leave the theater. In that respect, this is great film.

The Killer (1989)
10/10
Number one on my short list.
7 December 1998
Please don't dismiss this film as another Face/Off, Big Hit, Replacement Killer mindless action farce. Or even Woo's Chineese classics such as A better tomorrow or Hard boiled. This film from character development, to story developement, to imagery is one finest examples of film making I have ever seen. A tragic hero trying to find redemption from his crimes by committing more crimes, This is one of the finest films I have had the pleasure of seeing.

Everything Godzilla Wanted to be but couldn't.
3 December 1998
Being a fan of the old Japaneese Horror flicks, like most people of my generation, I was a bit excited when the arts theater announced a one day showing, in its original language with subtitles of 'Gamera - Defender of the Universe.'

My anticipation was not wasted. The special F/X were cheesy, the plot was sketchy, and the dialogue ridiculous. Ah but what fun there was in watching guys sporting rubber suits having a heck of a great time.

Real quick, A big monster hatches and terrorizes Tokyo, poeple flee, people die, the freeways are packed. Unlike Godzilla were New Yorkers were p***** off that they couldn't get back into their city and get stomped on, Japaneese folk apparently understand that radioactive creatures are bad news, though these creatures aren't radioactive. No time to explain THIS plot twist but it worked for me. Gamera must save the day! This movie doesn't take itself seriously for one moment, and it paces itself briskly. Industrial Light and Magic did not supply the F/X but Godzilla proves that a big budget does not equal a fun movie. Wanna have fun, check this one out. Wanna be p*****, go rent Godzilla again.
