The Rugrats Movie (1998)
A disappointing feature-length adaptation of the enjoyable TV show.
Why do filmmakers find it necessary to try to turn cartoons into musicals? I found the many star-studded music numbers irritating, and a poor attempt to appear "cool" to the adult viewers. The entire plot element of the train-wrecked monkeys added nothing to the film, and seemed senseless. My 7 year old son enjoyed it except for the singing. The TV show is better.
A Bug's Life (1998)
Captivating animation, decent storyline
I was in awe of the detail provided by Pixar. They really made it seem like it was filmed with a camera. Having the foreground and background come in and out of focus depending on the focal point was marvellous. The storyline could have been better, but held its own. The bits during the closing credits are the funniest of the entire movie - don't leave early. Head and shoulders better than Antz.
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997)
Kevin Spacey shines, bizarre characters would be unbelievable if it weren't a true story.
The movie is highlighted by two aspects: The absolutely bizarre characters, and Kevin Spacey's excellent performance. Based on a true story - you can't make up characters like this.
Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989)
Excellent performances - absence of soundtrack adds to uniqueness
James Spader gives an excellent performance. Much of the communication in the film is through body language, particularly the eyes. The intensity with which Spader looks into the eyes of the other actors shows how the integrity of his character contrasts with the phoniness of the character played by Peter Gallagher. I particularly like the effect created by an absence of a soundtrack. Low-budget filmmaking at its finest.
