Dr. Giggles (1992)
Dumb....
I let myself get talked into seeing this instead of The Last of The Mohicans.....I should have stood my ground. With free movies passes all the way around, we *way* overpaid.
I'm surprised to see this listed under "Horror", but not "Comedy" - although it's neither funny, nor scary. It tries to be a spoof....but doesn't succeed. I didn't connect with any of the characters, and left bored.
Don't waste your time.
Bye Bye Love (1995)
Very funny! Wonderfully cast
Good chemistry between the characters - whether it's friends, parents, ex's, or lovers. The timing was right on, and everyone delivered.
Great casting from the Radio Psychologist (Rob Reiner) down to the last little kid.
Randy Quaid is one actor that usually needs tempering in his roles.....but not this one. He managed to be outrageous, testosterone laden, and rough-cut without sacrificing the depth of his character.
This was also the first movie in which I'd seen Janeane Garofalo (aka "The Date"), and I immediately added her to my list of favorites. I've since rented several other of her films, all of which I've enjoyed - especially "The Truth About Cats & Dogs".
Also keep an eye out for Mae Whitman ("Michele") - She needs a little more seasoning, but someday this kid is going to have "Oscar-winner" in front of her name.
A thoroughly enjoyable film.
Stepmom (1998)
Wonderful unexpected drama
I went expecting a comedy of sorts, but found myself immersed in a heart-wrenching tear-jerker instead.
Susan Sarandon is wonderfully expressive as the mother/ex-wife who's always been there for everyone. A woman who has sunk so deep into the role of supporter that she has trouble admitting to her family that she needs to be on the receiving end for once.
I loved the relationship she had developed with her son - too often children in films are merely props, and there's rarely the depth and individuality expressed in this film.
Julia Roberts was hilarious as the fiancee/career woman who is more used to last-minute creative solutions than planning ahead. I would like to have seen her character developed a little more outside of the family ties......Friends? Family? Interests other than photography?
Ed Harris's role was a travesty......his influence was practically non-existent other than to explain why Sarandon & Roberts couldn't get rid of each other. I was disappointed that his character was allowed to be so translucent. It takes a lot of courage and strength to create a strong friendship out of a failed marriage - the respect, love and character that must exist to hold that bond were only hinted at, and I wonder if his gentle masculine influence was eclipsed intentionally to give "strong female" roles more screen time.
By the way - for those who were wondering about snowblowing......think Altoids.
Muriel's Wedding (1994)
Where's Mystery Science Theatre 2000 when you need them???
Ugh!!
I gave this film a rating of 1, but only because the scale doesn't go any lower.
The only character who remotely approaches a 2nd dimension is the best friend.....the rest are a terrible waste of film. Vitriolic airhead marries philandering stud, ugly depressed white trash offspring obsesses on joining the In crowd, marriage is the only way out (for both her & the swimmer). Were there any cliches they left out? And the plot - a generous use of the word - the plot was like something out of a 4th grader's book of MadLibs.
I stayed only because some part of me kept hoping something would appear that would make it worth my time.......but it wasn't to be.
Only twice in my life have I asked for my money back after a film.......the other time was because the film broke during the opening credits.
Hope Floats (1998)
Poor execution of a good idea
Somewhere between the moment someone said "let's make a movie about the prom queen who suffers a great loss and goes home to recover" and the final "Cut!", something was lost. Many good pieces, but the direction and editing were poorly done, and didn't leave enough glue to put it all together.
Good portrayal done by the daughter - I don't recall seeing her before, but I suspect I shall see her again. Sandra Bullock was decent in scenes with her family, but there was no chemistry between her & Harry Connick Jr.
It would have been helpful to have a few brief scenes showing life between Birdie (Sandra Bullock) and her husband, and best friend even if only still lifes showing the progression from High School to now.....it would have made the bond between them more apparent, and helped us to sympathise with her loss. As it was, both husband and best friend were simply paper doll characters labeled "The Bad Guys", and the audience is left wondering why they were there to begin with.
The constant interruption of boom mikes - in the bathroom, over the stairs, in the bedroom with the daughter - was extremely annoying, and distracted from an already weak film.
This film is not a winner. Thank you - please try again.
A Bug's Life (1998)
Entymology aside, Pixar has really worked the bugs out.
For everyone who's ever said "The ants are supposed to have six legs", my reply is "It's a cartoon, people ". They speak English, build aerodynamic flying machines, and circus caravans all without the requisite 5th & 6th legs. They're not supposed to do that either, remember?? Besides - any kid who's using cartoons to write a science paper already has serious problems.
Now that we've gotten *that* out of the way - Pixar has done it again. Like Toy Story, the creatures are well done, considering they had a more complex set of characters to build.....I say more complex, because this time almost all the cast share the same body type, so the differences were more subtle, and therefore more difficult to render.
The story is a simple one.......Over-enthusiastic bungler with a heart of gold accidently starts a war. In trying to fix it, he accidently becomes the hero. Combine the inventor in Back To The Future with Jerry Lewis in any film and there's Flik.
Great film I'd see it again in a heartbeat....You should, too.
Practical Magic (1998)
Steel Magnolias meets Witches of Eastwick
If you go in expecting only to be entertained, you won't be disappointed. The soundtrack will be a hit whether the movie is or not......The best scene.....OoOoolalaa Midnight Margaritas!
Sandra Bullock pulls off the shy, intellectual, dependable Sally - but then she should....she's played it over and over - in Speed, The Net, While You Were Sleeping, etc Nicole Kidman is incredibly sexy as the spacy rebel sensualist. And the aunts! *laugh* I nearly died when I saw them. Reminded me of an old eccentric aunt I grew up with.
The weakest parts were the male characters. Sally's husband was non-existent (did he even have a name??) Then the cop & the bad guy - neither were believable in their roles - perhaps it would have been better to omit them, and just let it be a light funny chick flick.
This would be a great video to rent for a slumber party or GNO (Girl's Night Out) and pretty soon everyone will be singing "Put the lime in the coconut".......
