Boys Don't Cry (1999)
After Seeing This....I Cried
After hearing so much about the film and the oscar and all, I rented it expecting the "powerful, honest and groundbreaking" performance described by other IMDB reviewers. Instead I was treated to a film with a plot that resembled watching grass grow and characters that I not only couldn't come close to relating to, never mid actually liking.
Much like the horse Whisperer, they could have wrapped this one up in under one hour, but I assume the director was trying to be "deliberate" -- a catch phrase for those who want to be entertained by movies that has come to mean unbearably dull.
Starship Troopers (1997)
The Best Bad Movie Ever Made
Easily the best bad movie ever made. A comedy, tragedy, love story mixed in with big, evil bugs. What could be finer. A great movie for people who want to be entertained and thought that the English Patient was horrible.
I especially liked the homage to Star Trek in that every planet had an atmosphere that both horrible aliens and our heroes could breathe, run, fight and say cheesy lines in.

The Spanish Prisoner (1997)
Like Scooby Doo meets a Michael Crichton Novel
Great movie...Captivating plot...mysterious characters..BUT What's with the ending? This reminded me of some Michael Crichton novel where the whole book is great but ends with "and then they left the island and all the dinosaurs die because of a clever trick we didn't tell you about."
Or, for you Scooby Doo fans, Velma's uncovering of the plot in the final 30 seconds of the show. All that was missing was Steve Martin saying "and I would have gotten away with it too if it wasn't for the meddling FBI!"
Even the second time through this one was confusing.
The Horse Whisperer (1998)
Who Edits These Things?
This movie joins a long list where the director should never be allowed near the editing room (Titanic,Ice Storm, Anything buy Costner,Scorcese,etc.). Is there some rule in Hollywood that a good movie now must be excruciatingly long? This one could have been wrapped up in under 2 hours, but Redford treats us to an additional 45 minutes of slow paced plot that adds little to the story (what was left of it from the book) and an all too unremarkable spark between the main characters.
Nice scenery though.
Fear of a Black Hat (1993)
Excellent
After a big tip of the hat to Spinal Tap, this movie is hilarious. Anyone who grew up watching MTV will love it and if you didn't, rent it anyway, the "My Peanuts" and "A Gangster's life" videos are worth the three bucks alone.
The Ice Storm (1997)
The worst film I have paid money to see in the past 2 years
Subtle? Moving? Quality film-making? I think not. A waste of some very good acting talent on a ho-hum plot that goes nowhere and lasts far too long. The best part of the film: the arrival of the credits.
