A romantic comedy without any romance or laughs
28 September 2001
This was a mind numbingly predictable movie that totally wasted its highly talented cast. With a good script they could have produced something magical. With the plot they were given they had no chance. A truly awful movie.

Great romantic comedy set in Yorkshire
8 October 1999
This is a story about the relationship between an unlikely couple thrown together when their respective partners embark on an affair. Kerry Fox plays the part of a struggling romantic novelist who has to take in Ray Winstone, who plays a flash, but down on his luck car salesman, as a lodger, to make ends meet when her husband deserts her. The film has some brilliant moments of comedy, and a great supporting cast. Ben Daniels shines in his part as a gay actor who tries to be a matchmaker for Fox. This was much more fun than Notting Hill and had the extra bonus of some good earthy sex scenes!

An Ideal Husband (I) (1999)

A superb witty romantic comedy
19 April 1999
Miramax have done it again and produced another winner. This adaption of Oscar Wilde's play is very classy. There are some brilliant, witty one liners, usually delivered by Rupert Everett on top form. Minnie Driver provides the romance and Julianne Moore is the perfect, scheming villain. The plot is nicely convoluted, involving blackmail, politics, an investment scam and romantic assignations. You know what the ending is going to be, but the twists and turns along the way keep you happily guessing as to how it is going to be arrived at.

Pleasant, but not exceptional
30 March 1999
A pleasant way of spending ninety minutes, but virtually the entire plot of the film is contained in the trailer, and what isn't in the trailer is fairly predictable. Nice scenery, but don't try and find it in Ireland, as the film was shot entirely on the Isle of Man.
