Enough with the Shatner-bashing, already!
30 October 1998
And now for something completely different, like "I LIKE Captain Kirk, in fact, I MUCH prefer him to Captain Picard's version of a starship captain. If Shatner is "too old," how come Picard isn't? Too many people get lost in the stereotypical image of Kirk as a shoot-em-up sort of "cowboy captain" when anyone familiar with the original show knows that the phasers are almost always set on STUN. Picard seems almost too brainy, sort of the next generation version of Spock (and there's simply only ONE). The show's token braniac, Data, is always trying to experience emotions (what's up with that, eh?) Anyway, I digress. Suffice it to say that Kirk has endured this long because he is GOOD at what he does, get the babes, thwart the bad guys, and save the Galaxy once again. Personally, I would like to see a resurrection similar to Spock's, but if that isn't possible, then I'll just have to be content with the fact that Kirk is more of a legend than he ever was.

Strange Brew (1983)
(You'll never look at your beer the same way again)
30 October 1998
Bar none (or is it "Beer none") the best movie of all time! Cornball humor abounds when two brothers, Bob and Doug Mc Kenzie help a young heiress named Pamela reclaim her family's brewery from the evil Brewmeister Smith (who plans to take over the world by putting a mind control drug in all the beer he makes) and his hapless assistant (who just happens to be her Uncle). This movie actually has a plot, though you'll probably be too busy laughing to care. An unexpected cameo by Mel Blanc is a nice surprise, and Max Von Sydow makes a convincingly sinister antagonist. This IS Canada, so the hero is a handsome hockey player nicknamed Rosey who falls in love (of course) with Pamela. Though it's hard to pick just one favorite scene, one of the best bits begins in the courtroom and ends in the loonie bin! Anyway, grab some jelly donuts, sit back, relax, and soon you'll be saying with the rest of us "TAKE OFF YOU HOSER!"

Heartwarming "slice of life" tale set in the jeweled beauty of Ireland
28 October 1998
I was entranced by this perky, quirky tale. My teenage daughter even more so. A wonderful family film, but a treat for all lovers of anything Irish, regardless of age.

Three scenes in particular were memorable: The "rain" of buttons Marie bestows on the Bally boys in their HQ, the look that passes between Fergus and Marie after the Bally boys successfully routed their "enemies" by charging them sans clothing, and the exchange between Fergus and Geronimo when Geronimo asks why the "war" ever started in the first place.

The youngsters are believable in their portrayals, and the beauty of Ireland was a treat for the eyes.
