Homegrown (1998)
Quality production of an amusing story line.Well worth the effort to see it
Another example of a really good small film that didn't get the promotion or distribution it deserved. Billy Bob Thornton just gets better and better. This little film about the Northern California Dope Growers, is great. I disagree with the categorization of the film as a comedy. It is more of a drama with moments of comic relief, but it certainly entertains. There are no great life lessons to be taken from it. (well maybe there is one lesson. If you're doing something illegal, it's best not to have a gunfight in the parking lot thus calling attention to yourself) An incredibly good cast, cleverly written and well performed I'd give this one a solid 8.
The X Files (1998)
An excellent film, based on a fascinating TV series
I was very curious to see if this film could stand alone, or if it would be necessary to have been a fan of the series to comprehend and enjoy it. For that reason I made it a point to attend the theatrical release with a friend who was not a regular viewer of the series. The film works! It provides enough background to entertain the first time X-files viewer and it advances the ongoing plot enough to satisfy the serious X-files addict. The characters, Skully and Mulder are interesting and attractive. The plot is complex and compelling. The effects are good to above average. I liked the film a lot and will recommend it to friends and customers.
Species II (1998)
A couple of hours of entertainment, no more no less
This was not a great movie. I mean for example, Even NASA (Never A Straight Answer) wouldn't make a six month one way voyage to Mars to spend less than two hours on the planet surface. The premise is hard to buy, but hey, it is science FICTION. The effects are not bad, and the acting is fair. There is a lot of gratuitous sex. Michael Marsden may be the bright spot in this average sci-fi flick. I wouldn't pay to see this in the theatre, but on video.... There are probably worse ways to spend an hour and forty-two minutes.
