Shussho iwai (1971)
A razor-sharp epic, filmed like a dream
This film is so marvellous to look at that you may wonder if Rembrandt has been re-born as a Japanese movie-director. Hideo Gosha has made an undisputable master-piece about rivalry, betrayal and the feud over a train-line. It is a classic gangster-film with a labyrinth-like plot. The Wolves is the real thing. This film is one of the best films ever made.
Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999)
rama-lama-schwing-dong!
Mike Myers is so funny that he can keep a movie floating just by improvising in front of the camera, which it seems like he has done i this marvellous comedy. The script is non-existent, and this is more like a collection of jokes, sketches etc., than a movie. Anyway: it's about the funniest film I've seen this year. Yes, Austin: You DO make me horny!
Juha (1999)
a colorful black&white-treasure
"Juha" is a finnish silent-movie in black and white about a farmer called Juha. This is probably the least commercial tag-line in 1999. However, if you, by any chance, manage to overcome your own prejudice, and see this film, you will experience 70 minutes of marvellous movie-making. It's poetic, it's warm and it has tons of careful, naïve humor. It is another masterpiece from the finnish master Aki Kaurismäki. See it.
La femme de chambre du Titanic (1997)
Feelings are cascading over the audience!
I love this film; it dares to let the audience be soaked in wonderfully melodramatic and lustfully vulgar scenes. Feelings and drama make the film rattle, and when, in addition to this, the humor is so frequent, this film can't fail. It is erotic, wonderful, lovely. Ace.
Idioterne (1998)
vibrant, touching and 100% believable
The Idiots is one of the few films I have seen that vibrates. The no-nonsense, in-your-face visual style, tears down the boundaries between fiction and reality, and we go through everything that the idiots go through. A story as original as this, made as a documentary is utterly original. This is a masterpiece. All the scenes say meaningful things about being human, and this is one of the best movies this decade. It is impossible to disagree. And last, but not least: møljepuling!
Kolja (1996)
tender. loving. amazing.
Kolya combines a big, pulsating heart with a wide range of visual creativity. It is touching, it will make you weep. But the tears that you shed aren't cheap. They don't flow from your eyes because of average schmaltz. This is a genuine masterpiece full of emotions, and Sverak has a fingerspitzen-gefühl that makes him a master filmmaker.
Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997)
funky movie with sexy bird
In parts as funny as the best scenes from Peter Sellers' career, Austin Powers really delivers. It's smooth as duck-s**t, and it has Liz Hurley in it. This is mad, unrestrained lunacy from the start, and ev'rybody should see this gorgeous film. Yes!
Ai no korîda (1976)
Over-rated, but with some good parts
I think this is a movie that sometimes manages to show how sexual obsession can take over your life, and eventually how it can throw you into the realms of death. However; it is too dull, and sometimes the endless sex-scenes are just boring, and that is the Numero Uno porn-film-cliché. But Ai No Corrida contains creative sexuality as well, and if you don't know how a hard-boiled egg can be utilized during intercourse before you see this movie, you sure will know it afterwards.
Happiness (1998)
An overdose of predictable irony.
Todd Solondz has one goal with this film, and that is to show the dark side of the average, middle-class community where everything seems to be in perfect order. Solondz apparently has a very small range of cinematic creativity, because he has only one way of trying to make people laugh: show as many tragic, miserable, fat, sad and lonely people as possible, and hope that the audience will mistake it as "black humour". The irritating irony that Mr. Solondz insists on pouring over every single scene ruins the potential of this film, as it all gets incredibly predictable. There is one good scene in this film, and that is the final scene of the incest-story. It is stunning, and it shows what this movie could have been like. Apart from that, this movie is just bad. Pure and simple.
Under the Skin (1997)
Very bad.
This movie about a girl who succumbs to occasional sex after her mother died is completely uninvolving. One wonders what the director wants to say with this, because Under the Skin isn't going anywhere. It is a huge insult.
L.A. Confidential (1997)
Classy
L.A. Confidential is a very impressive movie, indeed. Based on a marvellous novel by the great James Ellroy, this film establishes an incredibly convincing atmosphere and environment which in itself is an achievement. But this film doesn´t stop with that, like many other 40´s gangster-films do. It dives deep, deep down into the sharply drawn characters and tells an entertaining and dark story which would have been impressive enough without the Hollywood-glamour that surrounds it. Thrillers never get any better than this.
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Shallow grave
Pulp Fiction is a smooth, well-made and extremely shallow piece of work. It is basically a kind of black comedy about unsympathetic murderers who walk around in L.A. talking about foot-massage and $5-milk-shake. It gets boring after 10 minutes. But in the name of justice, I guess I should mention that I used to be quite fond of this movie. The thing is that I watched it on television yesterday, and I realized that the whole movie is utterly superficial. There is absolutely nothing more to it than meets the eye. That makes it quite fun to watch for the first time, but after a while you get to know all the phrases and "cool" set-pieces, and you start looking for something more, something "deeper". But there isn´t. Pulp Fiction is only four years old, but it has already started fading dramatically.
The Producers (1967)
Hilarious Hitler-comedy with a touch of genius
Mel Brooks´ astonishingly funny masterpiece about the "producers" has got the funniest theme-song ever to appear in a movie; "Springtime for Hitler". This song is as hilarious as they come, and the wild surreality that is exposed in it, is carefully taken care of throughout the film. Enjoy.
