Rover Dangerfield (1991)
Slow but Sweet Natured
Although the film suffers a bit from slow pacing and doesn't contain the technical magic of a Disney feature, it still retains a surprising sweetness. The story is centered entirely on the famous Dangerfield stage persona; and translating the comedian's raunchy material into an anthropomorphized lovable pooch must have been no small task. Visually, the artists make strong use of colors and shadings to reinforce mood, although many scenes lack zest and are just too static. Story-wise, I rate the film above-average for its warmth and low-key humor. Children these days are only interested in the hyperactive action of Pokemon, but the littlest ones will likely be charmed. "Rover Dangerfield" may look flat when held up to "Dinosaur" but it's certainly got more heart. 7 out of 10.
End of Days (1999)
Remarkably insipid...
I want my $9.00 back from Peter Hyams right now! Considering the potential this film had and how eager most of us are for Arnold to have a rockin' good comeback to the action genre, this film disappoints all the more. There were gales of laughter (and groans) from the audience as the film lumbered through silly action sequences and contrived quasi-Christian rhetoric. Many awful scenes are strung together like a recycled heap of Seven, Rosemary's Baby, and The Devil's Advocate; without any of those film's merits. Hyams' forced-angle camera destroys any rhythm the scenes could have had as his actors spin wildly to and fro, looking like children lost in Satan's theme park. What a shame so many talented people have come together for a remarkably insipid flick. I really want my money back!
