Awful
12 December 2007
I watched this on TV last night because there wasn't anything else on....and that's the only reason to watch this laborious, awful movie.

The music had a sort of authentic sound and style, but everything else was forced, contrived and without any sense of truth.

Don't bother even if there is nothing else to watch.

Most of the dialog was delivered at a pace that permitted small convoys of trucks through each word. The directorial tricks often overwhelmed whatever the scene was depicting. The Bill Murray character was a disaster and worse didn't even seem to be played with any effort; as if Murray knew it was a disaster and walked through the silly lines just to get them over with.

Enough...

Among the best...
10 July 2004
This movie is among the best I have ever seen. For me, the complex mix of genuine decentness & good along with seeming total amorality in the main characters was as good as I have seen. Well, then there is "The Unforgiven".

While I am required to present ten lines by this site, I am hard pressed to add more to my comment. So I will add that along with the subject movie and the other one named above, there is Deerhunter, Godfather, Pulp Fiction, On the Waterfront, Shawshank Redemption, Apocalypse Now, Patton,.....

This is my partial list of others that "...are among the best.

Blue no more

I loved this movie. The other night, I was sort of down in the dumps and while there didn't seem to be much on TV, there was this little gem from Australia. My wife and I are not big fans of musicals, but what the heck, why not watch it. We did, and it cured my blues.

A nice easy and wonderful movie to watch and enjoy.

A good movie doesn't have to be a big movie.

I liked this little movie a lot. While the plot's eventual outcome seem obvious, watching the characters get there, especially "Joseph" is worth it.

While Joseph is 70 and his new boarder is an unkempt girl of 22 this is not a stupid or mawkish May/December love story. Look, just watch it if you have a chance.

An overly one-sided propaganda film.

While the general storyline was moving and probably based on a series of true events, I had to believe that it was primarily made as an anti-communist piece of propaganda.

Having said that, I did enjoy the film and the style in which it was directed.
