The Casino (2004– )
Why the hell do I watch this every week?
15 August 2004
I've been to Vegas a bunch of times and love it, and I watch all the Vegas shows on Discovery, Travel Channel, etc., because they're interesting. When I saw this was coming on I figured I'd watch it, and for some reason I got hooked. The thing is- I don't know why! While the two owners are OK, the other featured people from the Nugget wouldn't last 10 minutes in the real world. Matt Dusk sings well, but really sounds more like a Sinatra wannabe. But he has a very inflated idea of his own worth. If he'd have done an end run around his immediate supervisor to the head guy of a company like he did to the entertainment director of the place he'd be out on his ass. Plus, he wants to play the showroom, but can't darw flies to see him in the lounge. Tommy, the host trainee, is just not too bright. I could never see him keeping a job, much less getting promoted, at a job that wasn't a TV show. How these "guests" of the casino all end up with suites at a Vegas casino is beyond me- it's all got to be staged.

Did they need the money that badly?
30 May 2003
I saw this piece of garbage on AMC last night, and wonder how it could be considered in any way an American Movie Classic. It was awful in every way. How badly did Jack Lemmon, James Stewart and the rest of the cast need cash that they would even consider doing this movie?

It wasn't THAT bad.....
7 October 2002
OK, I'm sitting home on a Monday afternoon and there's nothing on TV. I see this masterpiece is on Cinemax and say to myself "What the hell! How bad can it be?" It wasn't all that awful. There was nice eye candy and a few funny scenes. Would I be happy if I paid $10 in a theater to see it? No. But for free it killed an hour and 20 minutes decently. The amzing thing is that according to IMDB they're actually going to do a sequel.

Can USA network have LONGER commercial breaks next time?
12 July 2002
I was really looking forward to this show, and all in all it was OK. The plot was fine, the acting was good, etc. Monk's obsessive behavior, which was supposed to be quirky, got to be more annoying than quirky, but it's something that they can work on. But they'll work on it for someone other than me. Why? Because the damn commercial breaks went on FOREVER!!! They had to be 5 or 6 minutes long each. I saw more spots for "The Dead Zone", Bowflex and acid reflux than I can count. I was caught up in the plot, so I didn't want to change channels, but never again. I suppose I could record the show and skip the commercials, but that ain't the point.

I would rather be slowly tortured to death than see this piece of garbage again!!!
9 April 2002
God, did I hate this movie! I saw it at a sneak preview 13 years ago, and I STILL have bad flashbacks. It was, without a doubt, the WORST movie I ever paid to see. It was badly written, badly directed, and (surprisingly considering the cast) badly acted. I would rather be thrown off a rooftop onto razor sharp spikes, and then have my skin peeled off, than to sit through it again. Can you guess I didn't enjoy it?

Could it be any longer?
6 January 2002
This was a good- not great- movie. The sad part is that if it wasn't so drawn out, it would have been much better. The acting- particularly Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan- was tremendous. However, the other characters really aren't fleshed out well at all, which is really bad in a three hour plus long movie. "Shawshank" it ain't.

So it ain't Citizen Kane
28 July 2001
I saw this movie a few months ago, in the middle of a weekday afternoon. I was the ONLY person in the theater, which was pretty cool. Anyway, I went in just expecting to be able to shut my mind off and enjoy myself, and that's exactly what I did. However, this was a pretty decent movie. Jason Biggs (a local kid from a couple of towns over), Jack Black, and the very underrated Steve Zahn all good performances Amanda Peet is great eye candy- and what's wrong with that? The Neil Diamond soundtrack (and especially the concert footage during the closing credits) made this an enjoyable movie experience. If you're looking for an epic film, you'll be disappointed. But if you just want to spend an enjoyable 90 minutes, you'll be pleased.

A superior courtroom drama
18 April 1999
This is, quite simply, a great film. Strong characters, great performances all around, a wonderful script. Jack Nicholson and Tom Cruise's exchange in the courtroom is already a film classic. What strikes me most, though, is the casting. Rob Reiner was either brilliant and inspired in his selection of actors for this film, or he was completely nuts and got damn lucky. Tom Cruise and Nicholson...no big deal. Pretty obvious choices. But Demi Moore as Jo? Never before or since did she play such a heavy role, or one where her sexuality really plays no part. Kevin Pollack? Other than "The Usual Suspects" I never saw him in anything but comedies. But to take the risk of casting Wolfgang Bodison in the key role of Harold Dawson in his first film, Reiner shows incredible inspiration. The thing is- they all work.

A first for me
14 April 1999
Well, I never walked out of a movie in my life...until now. Just a terrible, terrible movie. I lasted an hour, and didn't laugh once. What a waste of talent. Too bad the projector didn't break so I could get my money back.

Can this be any more overrated?
11 April 1999
There are movies that you don't care for the first time you see them, but when you think back it grows on you. So you see it again, and realize that it is, in fact, a great film. Then there is this overrated piece of drek. Now, I will admit it was beautifully filmed. But it was so overblown, so drawn out, that the more I think of it the more I hated it. It was unrealistic to the point of just being impossible for me to enjoy. The characters- with the exception of Jack, Molly Brown, and Thomas Andrews- were impossible for me to like, and therefore, care about. I know that Rose was supposed to be the heroine, but she was just a spoiled little rich girl. It's a shame this tripe won an Oscar for best picture.

That '70s Show (1998–2006)
My God, were we really like that???
22 November 1998
This show scares me. I remember watching "Happy Days" back in the seventies and thinking that the characters were a bunch of goofs. Imagine my surprise twenty years later when this show comes on, and it's about US!!! It's "Happy Days" all over again, only instead of Richie and Potsie, it's me and my friends (although NOBODY had Tanya Roberts for a mom.) The show really shows the Seventies with a good amount of realism and affection. Like everyone else has said, the actors nailed their characters down. The best show to follow "The Simpsons" that Fox has ever aired, and the best new show of the season with the exception of "Sports Night."

It wasn't THAT bad
3 October 1998
I know that this show is generally regarded as one of the worst- if not THE worst- TV show ever made. But as I remember it, the show wasn't that horrible. Of course, I was 6 years old when I saw it 33 years ago, so I could be wrong.

Serpentine Shelly! Serpentine!!
19 August 1998
This is quite simply one of the funniest movies ever made. The interplay between Shelly, Vince, General Garcia, and really all the characters is priceless. The film is really cast perfectly. Alan Arkin seems born to play Sheldon Cornpett (Shelly, I call him.) And Peter Falk seems to be having the time of his life as Vince. Who better to play General Garcia than Richard Libertini? Of course you have to overlook huge bits of logic to really ejoy this film (How can the family have voted for Vince to retire from the CIA when only an hour or so before they didn't know he was in the CIA?) But the look on Shelly's face when he realizes that they had scammed $5 million each is maybe my favorite moment in a movie I've seen (conservatively) 40 times.
