Rise (2022)
A missed opportunity and a bit one sided...
The movie about the road of Giannis Antetokounpo to the NBA is not a very good one and you have the director and writer of the picture to blame. Giannis was born in Greece, he also went to school here and he is a native speaker.his accent is 100% greek. He has never been to Nigeria. He is aptly named the "greek freak" as we all know. Hiring a director from Nigeria who i m guessing has never been here other than to shoot the movie, riddles the film with prejudice and personal bias against the greek people.also, the writer is incapable of escaping black and white stereotypical characterizations probably because he only knows the usa version of things.they even go as far as to insult the country's history (saying that the greeks derive from africa and shango and zeus are the same.what???) and disregard humanitarian efforts from many official and unofficial channels here . It was because of Giannis' father great esteem for the greek educational system and culture that they stayed here and got greek names.they could have gone to other countries but they didn't. None of the facts that Giannis went to school here and that he had people helping him and his family to survive are mentioned or presented in any way.he did not just drop here , he had interactions which formed his personality.where are those? There are pictures and videos of this and giannis himself is grateful to Greece and the people here he calls friends. I love Giannis and he has always been an advocate of our country and is on the national team. But the film is lensed by a Nigerian who presents greeks as boogeymen for adhering to the law and has completely missed the beat of the country Giannis lived in and comes back to every summer.the most egregious scene is the racial slur in a game against Giannis. Giannis has many friends from those days and he is loyal to them as he is to the city of milwaukee.loyalty from giannis, probably one of his best qualities as a person, does not come through in this film.as far as the citizenship theme of the movie goes, one would expect at least a mention even at the end credits that the president of the greek democracy hosted the antetokoumpos and gave them passports etc (there is evidence of that online of course). If for nothing else to provide some closure. Instead of making it about how Giannis' case increased the efforts made on how to solve this problem in a legislative state in Europe, they stick to the "bad greek authorities" tirade. It would be so much better to treat Giannis' journey as a means to show how change has come about with regards to children citizenship when being born in an eu country. The story wobbles along without any real drama and lacks a scope and perspective that would transcend the actual facts to a lesson in human strength and tenacity. That is the missed opportunity really. I also find it unbelievable that the conditions they were living in were those presented.they were way worse. I get the fact that its a disney movie supported by nike (could you be more blatant Nike?) but they did a disservice to the true story and person Giannis and Thanasis really are. At the hands of a better writer and director this could have been better but it is not.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Not star trek
This is not star trek plain and simple.to call it star trek means first and foremost that you have done your work and know the material, sadly the creator and the writing stuff are oblivious to what is star trek. The complete lack of respect for science is what appalls me the most.spore drive that runs on mushrooms and a mycelial network.really? Its a dystopian mismash of other genres thrown under a recognizable IP .it is a disservice to the vision of Gene Roddenberry and an insult to the millions who were inspired by trek in the past.i have quit watching it and lived happily ever after watching the original shows .dont waste your time it is precious.
Star Trek (2009)
popcorn
that's all this is...sadly. what makes me freeze in my sleep is the fact that more movies will come of this that in turn will have NOTHING to do with previous trek history. the board has been wiped clean... now you can write anything you want.nice trick...star trek died with generations and put six feet under with this movie. this is a heartless monstrosity put together by people intent on demolishing everything only to build sth to the Hollywood/studio standard. star trek should have followed the independent film paradigm and gone away from the studio formula. that chance passed after nemesis.that was the time to go rogue. you don't need 150 million to make star trek properly, you need a vision and ideas to move forward, the characters already exist. who cares how kirk, spock and bones met??? recast star trek OK but don't do it with the intent of producing sequel popcorn movies. thats all this is really...a money investment to milk the star trek name for years to come, and in that respect this is ingenious on the producing's staff part. sure shatner and nimoy are over 70 or so cast them like middle aged adults 35 or so and create a story for them. tos only had 79 eps, plenty of story to tell there, no need to cast them while in college, unless you are thinking money wise in the long run. anyway i could write entire pages on this and about numerous inconsistencies in the film but the truth is there is no one to defend the ideals of star trek anymore. did you get the feeling watching this that the future will be optimistic and hopeful etc or that the next film will bring on even more of the same mayhem and explosions like this one? roddenberry had the intgrity of a true artist,as did nick meyer and protected their vision in favor of that merit alone. they did not work the other way around. this was thoughtless throughout, but money talks so i guess star trek is gone for good. bring on popcorn muncher/ cash machine number 2. p.s i would love to see jj reboot the godfather trilogy, that would be a blast...
AVPR: Aliens vs Predator - Requiem (2007)
Please no more acid
The latest film in the predator - alien realm was a great disappointment and i felt that the sum of the two franchises is weaker than its parts. I realize now that it was unfortunate to join the two milieus without having any insight story-wise beforehand.Although the previous film had some steady performances and the use of the creatures was more measured and therefore more enticing, this one goes off to showing rampant slaughter in its entirety. Both franchises had exhibited some engaging aspect of science fiction in the past but in this film no mystery or awe just kill after kill on all hands. Whereas the predator seems to have some coda for his actions the alien is just your monster of the week. In the past films, the protagonist had some sort of relationship to the creatures (ripley, Arnie , Danny glover's character) but in this one it's like the sheep and the wolves. Where is the fun in that? Turning the villains into heroes was the worst choice possible. This is not what it was supposed to be about in the first place, it was primarily about humans and the mystery the creatures represented. Now it's freddy vs jason. This might work for comic books not feature films...Are studios so desperate for cash that they 'll butcher (pun intended) anything including once reliable properties ? Very sorry i saw it and i will definitely close the book on this for good. Please stop making them, seriously...
Nowhere Man (1995)
Why was this show cancelled!!!
i can't believe this show was cancelled because it was possibly one of the best shows ever to air on tv .with it's unique character and his sensitivities this show gave me a different feel every week.while the atmosphere was constantly one of harrowing mystery, there were more intimate shows that made this show not only a quest for the truth but also a rewarding inner search.congrats to mr greenwood and larry herzog the producer on giving to the audience at least an equal to the prisoner.
