Claire Dolan (1998)
a mystery
The main character, Claire, is just a mystery. We never know what she feels, what she thinks. She wants to escape but surrenders to her pimp. She wants a real life. Is she going to find it in the last escape? What is true about her: What she tells her boyfriend? What her pimp says about her? Kerrigan's camera films her life - all her life - coldly, without any, or so little room for sentiments or feelings. He films NYC the same way he films Claire. Emptiness is everywhere, oppressing... Great movie! We need more daring directors like Kerrigan.
Voleur de vie (1998)
so slow
This movie is really boring. Everything is so slow, dark, depressing. The family in itself could be interesting: 3 totally different women living under the same roof. The two sisters are both self destructive in their own way. This story might have been in great book, but the movie isn't. The acting isn't even very good - Bonnaire and Beart are far from being at their best! Go only if you like Ouessant's wild landscapes...
À vendre (1998)
an unusual character
Sandrine Kimberlain is good in this movie, her character fits her really well. The whole movie is her quest, she tries to find something that is probably inside her. We don't really know if she'll someday find it but there is a little hope. Feelings and sentiments are very powerful. The characters are all so different that it gives a reality to the movie, even if Kimberlain's character is sometimes hard to comprehend. I could accept her actions and reactions even if I would act and react differently.
Mossane (1996)
An African tale
Like a lot of African movies I saw, Mossane is about everyday life: the village, the role of the uncle, the duty of the daughter, the parents' will, friendship... Small events turn to be of great importance. All kinds of feelings are expressed, all kinds of emotions get into the public. It is about life, but it seems to be beyond life.
La vie rêvée des anges (1998)
One of the best French Movies this year
I had some trouble getting into this movie at first but after 10 minutes I was overwhelmed. The story is fine, sensible, intelligent. The two main characters are different from each other. One - Natacha Regnier's character - is destroying herself for a guy who doesn't deserve it and she knows it. She knows that nothing good is going to come for her, she is bitter and doesn't make any concessions to life and friends... Elodie Bouchez' character is more contemplative, she loves life and she has an ability to be happy and to deal with lots of situations. Her desire to help her friend and the wounded little girl are very strong, very palpable. There is almost no music during the movie. Is it because Marie and Isa don't need music in their lives? Anyway, this director's choice certainly adds to the movie.
Dance with Me (1998)
entertaining movie
I liked this movie mainly because of the dance scenes. The plot isn't interesting in itself, and Vanessa Williams isn't an actress. But she is an excellent dancer. The scene when she practises alone in the ball room is just amazing. There is happiness in the whole movie, through dances and music. And once in a while, this is fun.
Vor (1997)
A very slav movie
This movie represents all the distress and misfortunes the Russian people had - and still has - to go through. It is about survival, the three main characters have different ways of living through the difficulties. It is especially about mixed feelings... The officer is the thief without any remorse, using everybody to get money. Katja is fooling herself. Her love for Tolyan and her need of him are so strong than she can forget all the roberries for a while. Her little boy, Sanya, gives another dimension to the movie: he didn't like the thief at first but he gets to love him, admire him and consider him as his father, despite the bad treatments.
Marquise (1997)
very disappointing
I wasn't interested in the story, mainly because I didn't see the point. Sophie Marceau is the only bright sight in the movie.
Saving Private Ryan (1998)
A Norman point of view
As a history major, brought up in Normandy, I loved this movie. It seemed real to me, every single minute of it, so close to the stories I heard in my childhood. I knew what happened during the D-Day landing, I know all the sites and museums connected to it. This movie made me realize something else: the horror that these guys had to go through to make my country free. This isn't about war theories but about men who weren't soldiers before WWII.
Ever After (1998)
A modern Cinderella story
I liked Danielle's character - even if Barrymore isn't my image of Cinderella - because it adds a modernity to the story. Anjelica Houston is great, her character isn't as bad as it seems at first, she just wants her elder daughter to marry the prince and she'll do everything to make her dream come true. There are a few scenes where we can foresee that she has to struggle too and that her life has not been easy.
