Finding Graceland (1998)
Good direction; First-rate acting; Fascinating story
This is the kind of film you'll be debating a year after you see it. Harvey Keitel at his best.
The film should have been nominated somewhere.
This is a truly adult film with no easy answers, but with fascinating people involved in a plot worth your close attention.
Almost Grown: Pilot (1988)
Excellent TV doesn't last long
When there is an excellent TV show such as this, I try to watch and tape it. They almost certainly will disappear or change to mush (as Chicago Hope did).
They don't come much better in concept or execution than Almost Grown -- writing, acting, production were all on the highest level.
This show is on my short list of fine failures (also Against the Grain; EZ Streets; The Fitzpatricks; and a few others)
Just the Ticket (1998)
Good story about characters you care about
My wife and I enjoyed a film in which the characters were all interesting, as well as earning your involvement.
The romance was real and very well done.
Andie must have wanted to be in a good movie instead of the drek they usuall give her because she and garcia put themselves and their money in it
Shakespeare in Love (1998)
Anachronisms galore, Poorly written, Execrably acted,Overproduced
Who paid off the critics? I had expected from the mounds of praise at least a good film. Instead we got this.
Judy Dench mailed it in. Joseph Fiennes should go back to parking cars. Gwyneth was not intolerable.
Tom Stoppard should retire.
Smooth Talk (1985)
Sexy is sometimes best when it stays between your ears
Ok. Almost nothing actually happens in this film, but that does not mean it isn't tense, exciting, interesting, and very sexy.
Laura Dern could start forest fires just by standing too close to the trees. Everything about this film reflects the quality and talent that went into making it.
Titanic (1997)
Goddawfulll! 100 MillonDollars and not a dime for a script
Anachronistic dialogue, pathetic direction (did they really all sleep through it at Oscar time?) Impossible behaviour for that day and time. Absolutely nothing worth spending any money on. Even the sets and costumes reeked of ineptitude and a vast failure in research.
Not even Leonardo DiCaprio, such an excellent young actor in films like...Gilbert Grape, can overcome the soggy, asinine, totally erroneous script and amateur direction of James Cameron, who should go back to Alpo dog food commercials.
I have heard that people have seen it more than once. They must have gone back to count the howlers.
Great Performances: Uncommon Women... and Others (1979)
Uncommon Women in an uncommonly good play
A very young Meryl Streep and Swoozie Kurtz are included in this excellent Wendy Wasserstein play about young women emerging from an exclusive college. The talent and future of the above as well as the rest of the cast and crew is obvious and their future course to excellence already charted.
American Playhouse: Who Am I This Time? (1982)
Unsurpassed tour de force for two fine actors
As a play within a play (contains scenes from Streetcar Named Desire) it is a showcase for the range of these excellent actors -- Susan Sarandon and Christopher Walken. It is also a sensitive tale of lonely people finding each other and their hearts.
If the well-earned emotions generated do not bring tears of happiness at the end, perhaps you should look for your own heart.
Slums of Beverly Hills (1998)
Interesting story very well written and well told
The industry seems to have awakened to the idea that a good story and a good script can contribute to making a good movie.
The people are interesting and their story continues in your head after the credits roll. Alan Arkin and (briefly Carl Reiner) should consider continuing their characters in another story.
