The Big Dog House (1931)
Hilarious!!!
Turner Classic Movies showed all 9 of the Dogville Comedy Shorts recently. I have NEVER laughed so hard in my life!!! These are hilarious spoofs of Hollywood movies. This is the story of a simple worker who was framed for a crime he didn't commit.
If you have a chance, see all these shorts!!!!!
Greed (1924)
Timeless classic, timeless message
I had heard a lot about this movie but never saw it until Turner Classic Movies showed it this past weekend. It is a stunning picture...and clearly an American tragedy that this movie was hacked apart like it was. The ones who were responsible should have taken the warning from the film's message.
That being said, I very much liked this movie. I thought the added still photographs tried to give the essence of the movie. I was also really amazed how they tinted the gold in the black and white segments.
The message of the movie is still as relevant today as in 1924. The irony is that at the end...even when the two men are dying of thirst, they still fight over the gold...and in the end it proves to be worthless.
With the Enron debacle, and other such examples, it's a shame that mankind hasn't learned that perils of true greed. A wise man once asked "What shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his soul?" His words still ring true, and this classic movie points that out very well.
Abraham Lincoln (1930)
Great movie, but....
I recently saw Abraham Lincoln on A & E. While I think it was a great movie, it certainly shows its age. This is one movie that is a prime candidate for film restoration. The print is very scratchy and unstable, and in parts, the sound is very noisy. With the wonders of restoration, we can only hope that this movie will be one of the next.
The Wizard of Oz (1939)
One of the greatest....better on DVD!
This is my favorite movie of all time. When I finally got a DVD player, this is one of the first DVDs I bought. I have seen many of the outtakes, deleted scenes, and the documentary with Angela Lansbury about the making of The Wizard Of Oz, which are all included in the DVD. However, what impressed me most was an audio-only supplement of rehearsal recordings and outtakes. There are so many of these that are very interesting. Also included are two MGM radio shows from 1939, touting the movie. This is well worth the cost of the DVD. The only thing I wonder is if the people who preserved the audio recordings so well would have preserved the deleted video footage, we would have all found some precious gems.
Erin Brockovich (2000)
Potty-mouthed Julia Roberts
This movie would have been a LOT better except for the cursing. It did nothing to enhance the plot whatsoever.
Other than that, this was a great movie. Roberts' did good justice to the character. I find it hard to believe that the real Erin Brockovich was as foul-mouthed. Albert Finney was great too.
Ransom! (1956)
a MUST see
WOW!!!!!!!! I just watched this movie...and it was absolutely riveting. 1 3/4 hours seemed like 30 minutes. Outstanding performances by Glenn Ford and Donna Reed. Leslie Nielsen in his first film. When it comes on TV.....see it!!!!!!
Hollywood or Bust (1956)
Good swan song
It's hard to believe that this was Martin and Lewis' last film. It was reported that they could barely stand each other to make this film--this is hardly evident when you watch it. There are some great laughs in the film, such as the beginning when Jerry spills popcorn in the lady's hair.
Some great comedic stuff is provided by the dog, Mr. Bascom. There is an especially cute segment where he meets and "falls in love" with Anita Eckberg's dog. Oops....don't want to give too much of it away.
All in all this is a very funny movie, and well worth buying or renting.
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963)
Great movie
Mad World is one of the funniest movies ever made, I feel. All star great cast. I don't think there ever could be a re-make.
Singin' in the Rain (1952)
Glorious!
One of the best movie musicals ever made. The singing and dancing are excellent.
Whose Line Is It Anyway? (1998)
It's really good
The American WLIIA is just as funny as the British version. I agree Drew Carey's no Clive Anderson, but what the heck?? It's just soooooo funny. I hope American audiences get it--and that the ratings are good.
