Bad Taste (1987)
Without a doubt a must see!
Grizzly, funny, disgusting, lovable! You must see this movie at least once in your life...do it NOW! I kind of wish there was a sequel....
What Dreams May Come (1998)
Epic and inspiring
I saw this movie not knowing what it was about. I left feeling that there is a better place beyond this one and all our loved ones are waiting for us.
The vision of Hell was not nearly as despair-inspiring as I would have liked. It makes me feel as if there was some footage cut out (which I would DEARLY like to see).
This film cane be summed up as "Love conquers all." And that's good enough for me. Take your loved ones (not kids) to see this. And be prepared to talk about it. It WILL have an effect on you.
Urban Legend (1998)
ho hum
There was Scream. Followed by I Know What You Did Last Summer. Then came Scream 2. Then this....
Ho Hum, another lets-slaughter-a-bunch-of-teenage-girls movie. Nothing special, nothing that stands out. Average filmgoer fare.
But I did learn one thing... women seem to run slower when chased by someone wielding an axe. What might motivate them more than certain death? Maybe a sale at Macy's.
I'm surprised that this sort of garbage is still being marketed to us.
Blade (1998)
derivative climax? improbable ending?
I just saw "Blade," and while a good film for its action content it seemed to me that the ending took a little from "The Dark Crystal" (but in a melodramatic and backwards effect)--hardly creative.
Also, I found it incredulous that Blade would be able to "mix it up" with La Magra (The Blood God, who was possessing Deacon Frost)... Hello?! La Magra is/was a *god* and Blade is just a half-breed "daywalker." Shouldn't La Magra have just wiped the floor with this guy? Even for a movie based on a comic book, that's a bit much.
I gave this a 5 out of 10. Pretty average fare, and plenty of gore. This movie will spawn sequels, I bet; after all, there's always more vampires out there to hunt.
54 (1998)
can this have really been the way?
If this is a reasonably accurate representation of the actual goings-on in Studio 54 during that time, there are just a few things I'd like to say:
(1) It should have been shut down LONG before the time it actually was, based on the outright illegal activites happening. Being a "hip place" is not an excuse.
(2) I wish I could have been there just once! ...I never said that I was above wanting to be amongst those activities...nobody 's perfect. ;)
How Stella Got Her Groove Back (1998)
Destined for video
How Stella Got Her Groove Back (or just "Stella" for short) is an ok film with an already-been-done idea that has little to really offer the true movie enthusiast. Whoopi Goldberg's character's sudden elimination gave nothing to the film; but Taye Diggs (the only newcomer in this film of note ) is great in his role. He will be seen more if for no other reason than being in this movie. When I saw this movie, there were a total of 6 people in a theater designed to hold several hundred. Within a week I fully expect this movie to be gone and on it's way to video--where it's true market may be found. This is not to lead you to believe that this is a bad film, on the contrary, but I just feel that it could have been better, much better. One thing that I would like to point out that I did like is that one of the characters (Stella's sister--the pregnant one) in the film was married to a white man. This was never mentioned, was never an issue, and was well done. Eliminating racism in this way is refreshing to me. For that aspect alone I rate this flim a whole point higher than I normally would have.
All in all, I can only hope that the book from which this was based is much better.
