Annette (2021)
Finally something new!
I've watched a lot of films. Art films, films from all over the world, films with a message, films that make me emotional, films with crude humor, surreal films, zombie films set in Melbourne. I've binged the Criterion Collection, John Meillon in Tripe, and Frank Stallone in The Rollerblade Seven. I've never seen anything like this before. Sparks are incredible and this film is magical. It's got deeply unpleasant themes and uplifting beauty.
The Glenmoore Job (2005)
Everything that's great about independent cinema
An entertaining story based around quirky small town characters, lacking the pretentiousness of so many similar indie films. Perhaps not entirely original or surprising, but one film like this is worth ten Hollywood blockbusters.
I came across this film by sheer fluke. Surfing through the TV guide, the description was intriguing enough to make me want to watch the show, and I was rewarded. It was funny but not over the top, clever but still charming. This is the sort of film that, when it finished, I just wanted to write down its name to make sure I caught it if it is played again. 8/10.
Tennis Elbow (1982)
Short and sweet
This is the kind of short film that they don't make anymore. There's nothing pretentious or overdone about it, and the short format is just enough to get the job done.
Australians will find some familiar faces among the cast, many of whom also contributed to the gags.
I saw this late night on SBS's short movie programme, "Eat Carpet". Fortunately I had the VCR running, and "Tennis Elbow" became one of our favourites, along with shorts like "Tripe" and "The Magic Portal".
"Tennis Elbow" is a great collection of gags, strung together by a farcical, if thin, plot. It's low budget and low grade, but a bundle of fun.
