Ladies in Lavender (2004)
excellent performances
A bit contrived and melodramatic, and leaves us wondering when ET will phone home, as in, where did he come from? Judy Dench's character is a little naive to become so enraptured, but the setting is wonderful, and lots of good performances by secondary and supporting characters. Worth a watch.
Da 5 Bloods (2020)
not worth watching - I'm a Spike Lee fan
Spike better stick to what he knows. I couldn't finish it after an hour and a half... hackneyed and contrived, the good guys turn into clowns.
Malcolm & Marie (2021)
Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor come to mind
One layer after another gets peeled away until the raw self in all its vulnerabilty is exposed... one great thing about black and white is all the grey in between.
Fleabag (2016)
Funny, dark, but filled with life and hope.
I don't remember giving anything a 10 star rating before, maybe I have, but this is a 10. Brilliant writing, absolutely magnetic performances, wondrous cast.
Rubicon (2010)
great political thriller
Classy, smart, and doesn't underestimate the audience, but if you want to browse on your iPad while watching this show, forget it, you'll miss what's going on. The causes for the events which occur in the pilot are revealed slowly, but inexorably, following parallel paths beaten two main characters: Katherine Rhumor (Miranda Richardson) and Will Travers (James Badge Dale). They're leading in the same direction but don't even know each other.
These episodes are written and directed by some of the top talent on the east and west coasts. It's not only well plotted, but the characters are fully fleshed real people, who sometimes do things that are completely surprising. It's never predictable but you can expect that the conspiracies will be revealed in due time.
Watch the first couple of episodes, and you'll be hooked.
