Beowulf (1999)
Seen worse, seen better
The keyword to this movie is quite simply suspension of disbelief. If you can manage that, the movie isn't half bad - cute in it's own medieval/futuristic kind of way. Christopher Lambert once again plays the kind of role he plays best (Highlander (1986) is a great film in my opinion).
The script is based on a 6th century German heroic poem so the story is well known with the interesting twist the post-apocalyptic setting gives. Sit down and relax for an hour and a half with some friends and enjoy a good laugh when it gets too absurd. Then when you're done, go rent Blade (1998) to see how it's really supposed to be done. Beowulf can manage a weak 7 of 10 in my book.
Babylon 5: In the Beginning (1998)
Fine for the fan, dull for the newcomer.
While Babylon 5: In The Beginning is a watchable movie for a fan of the series (as I am) I would never recommend it to someone who has never seen the series on TV. The story gives great background information for a large amount of the episodes in the series, but is largely aimed at someone who already knows a lot of the references. A somewhat disappointing 7 of 10.
Wild Wild West (1999)
Boring action-comedy
With all the hype this movie has received, it is hard to imagine it not being a great success. Whatever success it does have, it won't be due to the acting performances by the stars of the movie such as Will Smith, Kevin Kline and Salma Hayek.
Having seen the movie at a special preview before the world premiere, I must admit to being rather disappointed. While I didn't expect a whole lot from the trailer (my only thought was "what in God's name is that spider!?") I was still not satisfied. Will Smith's acting is OK but no more than that. Kevin Kline has some great moments, but suffers from the horrible plot. Salma Hayek is only in the movie for one thing: Her name and good looks (which of course is a bonus for the film).
Having said that, I still give the movie a 7 out of 10 - which in my book is an average OK movie worth watching on video or TV..
Tale of the Mummy (1998)
Mediocre movie with a lackluster ending
While Talos the Mummy is often portrayed as a horror movie, anyone who watches the movie as this will be sorely disappointed.
Instead Talos the Mummy can be seen for the sometimes crude - but often cute - special effects and the okay acting by Sean Pertwee. The story itself begins well and continues through the movie, though ending extremely disappointingly.
