Powder Keg (2001)
Wow
30 July 2001
While all of the other 4 films in the "Hire" series are fine examples of short film-making, they were pretty much nothing more than Clive Owen's fancy driving of the BMW vehicles with a slight back-story thrown in.

This film was from start to finish a stunning, and powerful story. Gripping, gritty cinematography with fine acting. This time the car was the back-story - not the focal point.

A wonderful conclusion to the series, and a must view. It's free and available on bmwfilms.com right now, so what are you waiting for?

If they didn't want the pieces to be joined, why make a key?
16 June 2001
So there is this triangle which has the ability to give the posessor powers to control time. It was abused, and caused an ancient city to be destroyed. A group of (never named) ancients had it split up into two pieces, and hid it in elaborate tombs on opposite ends of the world.

Now these ancients went to a huge amount of effort to hide this thing. Why in the world would they even bother to make a key for it? Also why only two pieces? Why not complete distruction. These thoughts were plaguing me throughout the entire film.

Now i can sit back, suspend reality, and enjoy some of the most ridiculous of films. I am a big pro-wrestling fan after all if that says anything about my ability to ignore obvious fakeness. However, there is a threshold which this film crossed many times - compounded by the fact that the film was taking itself seriously.

The characters have no depth, and you're never really allowed to know anything about them. Even Laura Croft is a mystery with the only real development into why she is the way she is being a couple of flashback scenes. Over-all very little effort is made to make interesting characters. Really the most "development" you see is the constant effort to show off Angelina Jolie's bust, as it is accentuated in just about every way possible.

The Illuminati sub-plot had the potential to be interesting but had next to no expansion other than about 5 minutes worth of screen time. Once again going back to the lack of character depth.

One final gripe was that the CG was for the most part very intrusive, and looked at many times to be blue screen'ed on.

I will say that Jolie looked and played the part of Laura Croft well, but the fact that someone here said that it was an Oscar-worthy performance is absolutely ludicrous. An accurate portrayal of an already very one-dimensional video game character is really no challenge.

Good enough for a rental, or bargain matinee. Don't pay full price to see this turkey though.

It's like a "Cathy" comic-strip brought to screen.

Formulaic, and predictable romantic comedy.

It's the kind of thing we've all seen a hundred times before -- neurotic 30's single girl with the typical mix of friends, a "perfect" relationship ends up going sour, and it all ends up dandy in the end.

Those coments aside, this really wasn't a bad film. Nothing groundbreaking by any means. The performances were well done though, and I did find myself laughing at quite a few of the scenes. Chalk it up as a good date movie, and move on.

Gangs in L.A. will never die, just multiply. Colors.

I always enjoy watching this film. Raw, and uncompromising. Great performances by Sean Penn and Robert Duvall.

A dark, and gritty portrayal of gang life in LA, and the special cop task force who deals with them. The film is never preachy, or insulting in it's execution. Awash with violence and profanity - but it's not glorified and serves a purpose.

This movie isn't without flaws. I could have done without the drawn-out, and pointless lovemaking scene with Penn and Maria Conchita Alonso. T-Bone's arrest scene could have been explained without a feeble attempt at comedy. Also, I think "eyy hoolmes" is said about 50 times too many. I feel that these greatly undermine what is overall a solid motion picture.

If you're a fan of gritty cop/crime dramas, or of gangsta' movies, I strongly urge you to see this film.

Moulin Rouge! (2001)
"The Wall" meets "End of the Affair"

Artsy, visually dazzling, and entertaining film. Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman are acceptable vocalists.

Fun film, but I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who can't stand a movie with the pace of a frenetic MTV music video.

Simply put, it rocks!

I can't even begin to describe this movie, named after it's budget, as it's truly an experience in itself. Essential viewing for anyone who can find an opportunity to see this gem.

William Lorton is an extremely talented film-maker and if you have the chance to see any of his films jump for it!

Decievingly Great Film
29 September 2000
Warning: Spoilers
This contains some very minor spoilers - you have been warned.

I was resistant at first to watch this film, it just seemed so cheesy and so 80's. I must admit after watching the first 15 minutes or so I was about ready to pass it off as another typical sci-fi B movie.

As it progressed, I got more and more interested in the premise, characters and wanted to cheer on the good guys to win over evil. Notable also, is the wonderful soundtrack performed by Queen.

Most of the fight scenes were special effects filled bonanzas, and ironically enough I found the last fight scene to be upremely awesome - just MacLeod and Kurgan in an empty, dimly lit and expansive warehouse duking out - proving that less can be more.

If you enjoy science fiction films I can't encourage you enough to see this. You won't be disappointed. I sure wasn't.

Worst movie I've ever seen!

Absolutely horrible movie from start to finish. This B-Movie satire isn't worth the paper the script was written on. A love or hate film for sure, I absolutely hated it. The best part was when it was over. Even Mystery Men, which I also hated was better than this steaming pile of turd.
