The Man from Elysian Fields (2001)
The actors are great, the rest is so-so
This film is recommended on the strength of the actors, especially Mick Jagger, James Coburn and Michael Des Barres whose performances are a joy. The story is a bit too predictable and really left me disappointed in the end, and Andy Garcia's hotheaded, pathetic loser was irritating. It was refreshing to see this film's Pasadena location instead of boring LA again. Go see it!
Wing Chun (1994)
Absurd and charming
I don't have much to add to others' comments, but just wanted to mention I just saw it for the first time this evening on the big screen and found it to be charming and entertaining. Yes, the plot is absurd but what do you expect! It's great and highly recommended.
Joe Gould's Secret (2000)
Touching, thoughtful story
The (true) story takes place in 1940. Ian Holm is Joe Gould, a New York bohemian, kinda crazy, but with lots of depth and lots of friends all over the city. Stanley Tucci is Joe Mitchell, a writer for the New Yorker, who encounters Joe Gould in a coffee shop and is intrigued by him, and he befriends him to write a story about him. The filming is subtle but realistic and it feels like you are walking the streets of New York along with the two Joes. Sometimes comical, sometimes sad, this film will leave you revisiting it long after you've walked away.
Topsy-Turvy (1999)
An entertaining insight in the lives of likeable characters
This is an entertaining insight into a brief period in the lives of the likeable Gilbert and Sullivan, and a glimpse of life at the end of the 1800s. Mike Leigh really brings them to life and even supporting and minor characters are successfully presented. You don't have to love G & S's work to enjoy this film. Despite there being no action scenes, profanity, or sex - sounds boring doesn't it? - I recommend it. Mike Leigh and his actors and crew have done a wonderful job. This is what shows the difference between a real 'film' and a ("Hollywood") 'movie.'
