- A Swiss widower accepts a deal that tempts fate after an ill advised stock market tip destroys any hope of living out his winter years in Bali's sunshine. Now his very survival rests on a friend's dying wish.
- Ruedi Luchsinger, a former Swiss taxi driver, planned on retiring with his wife in Bali but she dies before the shared dream is realized leaving him to emigrate alone on meager savings and no pension. Luchsinger moves into a guesthouse in Bali and, in the occasional company of three other elderly Swiss retirees - Balsiger, Zangger and Hilfiker, seemingly sleepwalks towards death. When Balsiger offers an investment tip Luchsinger grabs the chance to improve his fortunes but a stock market "correction" turns that hope to ashes. Rather than slowly decay, he decides to go out in a in a blaze of glory and leap into a volcano. But that plan too goes awry when Zangger reveals he is dying of cancer and offers a final lifeline - an identity swap: Luchsinger will become Zangger. There are two main tasks: Zangger has to die which, is not easy to witness and Luchsinger must reincarnate as a newly minted Zangger. Hilfiker and Balsiger enthusiastically join the caper along with Guesthouse's local Balinese employee Ni Wayan. But with little to go on regarding Zangger's past, apart from the existence of an estranged daughter, Luchsinger (or Zangger), is left facing the unexpected consequences of tempting fate on the Island of Gods.—Markus Koebeli
