I Love How Dan Levy Handles The Writting Of This Episode
c-keenan200131 May 2019
The loving relationship that Patrick has with both of his parents is made evident in this episode. As well as the loving relationship that Patrick has with David is also made evident by the way that David tries to help Patrick cope with telling his parents about his sexuality? I daresay that this episode was written from Dan's own experience of having to tell his own parents about his sexuality and being opened and honest with his parents. :) I can't imagine the worry that Dan must have gone through. He also knows that not every g/l person has parents that are as understanding as his or as Patrick's parents were.

Heartwarming

Warning: Spoilers
The show rarely veers into dramatic territory, but this one sticks a toe in and it's amazing for it. When David realizes Patrick has not come out to his parents, the situation could have been overplayed or underplayed but the show does it just right. Noah Reid does such a terrific job showing how hard it is to come out, even if you think your parents will be loving and supportive. Dan Levy does a great job with David's character development as well, as he tries to untangle the situation but also let Patrick come out on his own terms. It's also great to see Patrick's parents but surprised and processing it but loving and supportive.

Beautifully written episode for a delicate situation

Warning: Spoilers
To say this episode is touching is an understatement. Dan Levy did an excellent job writing and acting in this episode. It's amazing that in 22 minutes, so much can be expressed and said. You truly do feel the love between David and Patrick and it is felt even more during the scene of Patrick coming out to his parents. I'm sure Dan Levy used himself as a source to write this material. Not all parents are accepting of their kid's sexuality, as was the fear in this episode when Johnny accidentally let the cat out of the bag. What could have become a catastrophe turned to a sweet and tender moment between David and Patrick later in the episode. Dan Levy and Noah Reid's acting is so well done in this episode.

Nicely executed
Kingslaay30 January 2021
I have seen shows that forced relationships in our faces, hetero or otherwise and they've never stuck. David and Patrick are landed so well. The bond and growth of both characters is so well paced, natural and well written. It is because of these elements landing so well that ultimately makes it moving and delivers a good payoff. The final moment between David and Patrick is something so many shows and films could only dream to achieve but fail to get there. I realise I don't plainly dislike Rom coms just their poor and weak execution of chemistry. They should all take a page from Schitt's Creeks playbook.

The show only ever touches on the dramatic, but this episode was really special. Dan Levy and Noah Reid did an outstanding job telling a really nuanced story. Loved it.

Everyone Should See This
Hitchcoc9 May 2021
The principle plot takes place when David decides to give Patrick a surprise birthday party. He invites Patrick's parents, but doesn't know that they have never been told of their relationship. This leads to incredible tension and some of the most touching things I've seen. Meanwhile, Moira hits the convention circuit where people pay big money for autographs. I need to figure out what the thing about feet is.

Must Watch!

This episode right here is the best example for every parent to learn how to be a good parent! You dont have to help your kids financially but just that moral support and that affection you provide to your kids and become accepting! As parents you already have gained trust from your child just dont abuse it if you cant help them its fine adult children don't want you to help them they just want you to support and accept their decisions, I can't emphasize more what this episode has done! Every parent needs to watch this its not just about your gender orientation this episode is an example of how to be a good parent! Also this just made me love the show to the extreme!!! and I have watched Game of thrones so this is something new and it touched my heart! I am out of words to describe how brilliant the moments were!

I have the sweetest episodes of The show ever. Very sweet and very funny. Subplot of Moira at the soap opera festival is something else.

Warning: Spoilers
David has planned a surprise party for Patrick who has always wanted one.

Alexis has gotten a booth for Moira at a convention. There, another older actress tells Moira who wanted to avoid her because she didn't want to be seen at this convention tells Moira that we actresses need to do anything to stay in the spotlight. She has letted go everything about worrying how ppl see her and does conventions all the time.

Turns out Patrick's parents just wanted whatever makes him happy and were not upset he is gay.

Patrick walks in and everyone says surprise. David says they couldn't nail happy birthday in rehearsal so surprise it is.

At the end Patrick and David slow dance to beautiful music - my favourite scene. Twyla tells them she has to wrap up in 5 minutes.

The episode ends providing websites for information on sexual orientation and gender identity. The ending credits roll by faster, felt like more like a movie than a TV episode.
